One of the segments done by Ted Petok. He won an Oscar for The Crunch Bird, which holds the record for the shortest film to ever win the award at little over 2 minutes.

And to think, PES could've beaten that if those losers at the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences didn't give the award to yet another Disney film in 2013.Mr. Big wrote: ↑Wed Jun 17, 2020 8:10 pmOne of the segments done by Ted Petok. While I'm at it, "The Crunch Bird" is the first Oscar-winning American cartoon to be produced outside of California and New York (it was made in Detroit, Michigan).

How many people know that Superman appeared on "Sesame Street"? Made at Filmation.

I remember as a kid I would get so scared when the storm hit the sailboat.

Re: Sesame Street animations and stuff
There's also a continuity error when Supes highlight the word "Sand"
It's tilted in the first frame because, in order to drag the cel of Superman carrying the sailboat to safety and make it look like he's flying down, they had to tilt the camera in order to make that work. However, they completely forgot that the word "Sand" was going to appear, which lead to scene continuity issues.
This sequence is less than 2 minutes long and there's already animation errors. Filmation, amirite?
One way they could avoid this was to film the scenes without the word, then film the word "Sand" separately on green/blue screen and superimpose it after the fact in post-production, but I imagine Filmation didn't have the money to pay for that.

Alice Braithwaite Goodyshoes was an early recurring animated segment on "Sesame Street", featuring a little girl who likes to brag about herself. Here's one that also has a reaction by Bert and Ernie at the end.
The cartoons were done by Fred Crippin.

Re: Sesame Street animations and stuff
So for years, I was sure I'd heard the voice actor who plays Mrs. Puff on Spongebob somewhere before, but I never looked into it until today. Turns out, she did exactly one voice in something I watched:
And while we're on the subject, this is one of many, many shorts animated by Mike Christy. Even at this bitrate, you can tell it was animated on a computer. I could tell too, as a kid watching on my parents' 19-inch TV. According to the Muppet Wiki, they were in fact made using the exact same setup I had: Deluxe Paint on an Amiga 1000. Probably in combination with Deluxe Video or some kind of special exporting equipment.
Here's another one of them, which features my favorite Sesame Street punchline ever.

Remembered this song. This was made by Joey Ahlbum, who made a lot of those Nickelodeon bumpers that aired throughout the 1990s. He did a bunch of things for "Sesame Street" as well.

Re: Sesame Street animations and stuff
Watching John Korty's movie "Twice Upon a Time" made me curious about the Sesame Street shorts he did. Here's one of them.
Korty dubbed the animation technique he used "Lumage", short for "Luminous Image". It's a form of cut-out animation done by taking synthetic fabric called Pellon, cutting and spraying them, and then laying it out on a huge light table, which would then be photographed frame-by-frame.

Re: Sesame Street animations and stuff
I was suddenly reminded of this one just now and realized I have no idea what, if anything, it was supposed to be teaching. And it wouldn't be the first time either. I think sometimes animators would just sneak in shorts that had no educational value by making them funny enough that nobody thought about it too hard.

Re: Sesame Street animations and stuff
And after some cursory research into its animator, Dan Haskett—who has had quite the varied career working on everything from Disney movies to The Simpsons to Richard Williams' bizarre Raggedy Ann movie—I discovered that he also made this one, which I haven't thought about in ages:

Oh shit, Dan Haskett! He's one of the animation greats. Yeah, definitely his work.
He still works in animation. He was the lead character designer on the new Looney Tunes cartoons for HBO Max. A perfect choice, really.

Re: Sesame Street animations and stuff
When a show's animation is mostly farmed out to an overseas studio, is there some kind of criteria for when they make an exception like that?

Re: Sesame Street animations and stuff
IIRC, there were more animation done in-house in season 1 than in later episodes.
Nowadays I think it's up to how much the director's willing to do the work if they're specific about the animation. Usually the more surreal bits (the "Land of Chocolate", for example). Or with the layouts, how much poses are needed. David Silverman, the supervising director, seems to make the call most of the time.

Re: Sesame Street animations and stuff
So I just learned about "Teeny Little Super Guy", a series of Sesame Street segments that aired in the 1980s
One of the animators for it recently posted a video explaining how it was made:
I used to have that 16mm Bolex similar to the one shown. This is extremely low-tech animation.

Williw Wimple was a recurring segment on Sesame Street, about a guy who carelessly throws away garbage in places, causing endless pollution.
These segments were directed by Abe Levitow, a former Looney Tunes animator under Chuck Jones. They were among the last things he did before his sudden death at age 52.

I guess Willie Wimple didn't have the foresight to realize that if the whole planet got polluted, it would affect him as well.
