2020 US Presidential Election thread

Let's kick it off with a bang, shall we?

In 2016, Donald Trump accused Hillary Clinton's campaign of paying people off to drum up support.

In 2020, his wannabe opponent Mike Bloomberg is actually doing it.

In 2016, Trump's cheerleaders in the media accused victims of violence of running false-flag operations to drum up sympathy.

In 2020, it looks like Mike Bloomberg has decided to start actually doing that too:

This is starting to be the equivalent of "there's always a tweet".

Fuck the DNC and fuck Bloomberg. It was so obvious the audience was bought by him at the latest debate when they booed Sanders for suggesting teachers be paid more and Warren when she asked why Bloomberg wouldn't release his tax returns. Oh yeah and tickets to be in the audience at the DNC debate cost between 2 and 3 thousand dollars apiece. :thunk:

Bloomberg is basically Trump Lite, but someone who is A) actually a billionaire instead of a pretend one and B) probably smart enough to be less blatant about his corruption. Imagine being such a bad candidate that Biden looks good by comparison.

Let it sink in that we have a frontrunner in the USA who self-identifies as a democratic socialist, and take Bloomberg running at all as a sign of progress. Because we finally have a candidate with strong enough support to actually threaten the sheer obscenity of his wealth, along with all of the other elites he represents.

He and Trump are both poised to fight dirty, but I'd like to think that even if either of them are successful, our population at large will grow ever more disenfranchised with billionaires and their sole objective of sabotaging our government to suit their own influence.

I understand why the message is this way, because antifa is supposed to be this terrible group causing harm to everyone. But some people in the chain/web of promotion really are pro fascism and this president is running on that.

Biden's response to police brutality was that they should "shoot them in the leg instead of the heart" and I find that to be a pretty apt metaphor when making the choice of who to vote for in November.

Joe Biden:
- has not, despite a lot of eyerolls from a wide range of commentators, really hasn't made any major mistakes in his campaign. A few gaffes.
- has held a kind of amazingly consistent lead of somewhere around 7 points throughout the entire year, despite the turbulence of....the entire year
- has quietly positioned himself pretty well to maneuver through a general election. Trump's attempts to link Biden to radicals, including the (popular with activists, unpopular with the public) police abolition and defunding movement, has not quite worked (and Biden did this while otherwise being very sympathetic to the BLM protest movement). Joe Biden simply isn't believable in this role, and his campaign has smartly put out the right statements at the right time. Intellectual honesty: I supported Bernie in the primary, but I don't know if he would have pulled this off (a lot to consider in that hypothetical, though).
- likely benefitted from some lame attack lines from opponents (being called senile in the build-up to a debate is actually very good for you; some post-primary left attacks came off as forced and sometimes rather dubious)
- is too old to care about Twitter, which possibly won him the Democratic nomination
- probably fared fine through tonight's unpleasant debate

Donald Trump:
- does not have the activist energy behind his campaign that he did in 2016. You don't have to like that energy to notice it was palpable at that time; I haven't seen that this year at all. I think Trump thinks doing winks to Proud Boy or whatever is the way to make this up, but that's like 500 assholes in Oregon or something
- will probably have a presidency defined by his COVID response. He had nothing to say in the debate to the points of basic competency in his handling, being relegated to "no u"
- is on like the eighth campaign manager
- was too stupid to get Republicans to pass wall funding during the lame duck period after the midterms (seriously, this blew my mind at the time)
- is a tiresome jerk that, more than any given individual scandal, I think the country is just tired of, in the same way Springer got old after a few seasons
- (moderate confidence) is likely to lose the election based on the choices of older white voters, and may, at the same time, see his numbers with nonwhite voters (mainly Latinos) increase, especially men.

I dunno. Trump still has the chance to overperform, has (had?) a bit of a built-in electoral college advantage, I'm not saying he's finished. Nor am I a straightforward Biden fanboy (is anyone?)

But the metrics all year have been showing a possibly pretty simple result: Biden defeats Trump.

I just want this century of endless suffering under Trump to end.

Biden's the least-inspiring candidate Democrats could possibly pick (Bloomberg doesn't count), and I desperately hope that they haven't screwed up again like in 2016, by assuming they can't possibly lose if they play politics like the Price is Right, leaning one inch to the left of Republicans.

But please, please, please, just end this dumbest four years in American history.

Well, I got a job canvasing Biden voters for the election. They left me pick the days I work. I'm doing it on my off days from my main job. They give me a little ipod with the addresses of people I need to contact.
