Re: im looking at anime
Yesterday I watched "Whisper of the Heart". It was one of the less annoying movies although the tacked-on romance was a stretch with the emotional flip-flopping. I respect it more for the creator-side of the story than the romance.

Country Road was very irritating. Especially when I put the audio track to Japanese and thought Netflix had screwed up the tracks.
Some time ago I tried to watch Drunken Master and it had English right at the beginning of the Chinese track (and sprinkled throughout the film), however that was a fault that perpetuated from a shoddily assembled DVD.

Re: im looking at anime
Watching My Hero Academia and trying not to think about how the heroes are such a bunch of fucking cops, and some of the villains would have good points if they'd stop bombing shit. So far I've seen two of them argue that their own neurodivergences have left them unable to interact with society in all the ways that convention demands, and this obviously isn't rare. Even Shiguraki occasionally comes off like he's just been led down the wrong path.
Meanwhile one of the heroes is like, "If we break the rules, what makes us different from the villains?" Fuck off and ascend along the stages of moral development, dorks. You're too old to be confusing laws with ethics. How is Bakugo the only one who seems to understand that? Dude's got a school shooter face, he's a class 1-A hole, and yet I'm pretty sure his conscience is actively developing some connection to right and wrong.
Show's good though

MHA keeps having cool female characters with interesting powers and instead we keep focusing on guys, the good guys are all male against male antagonists and the girls are totally contributing, over there, off-screen

Re: im looking at anime
Watched "Spirited Away" yesterday. It was alright. Since it is leaning completely towards the fairy tale genre I give it more leniency and it's easier for me to gloss over the stuff I'm not really digging. Animation-wise super fantastic and the designs and background awe inspiring (although a few short CGI-enhanced scenes stick out in a negative way). I get why a lot of people always mention it.
Also I read Rumiko Takahashi's lesser known manga "One-Pound Gospel". A very short 4-volume manga about a glutton of a boxer in the featherweight weight class and a nun in training in a "Will they? Won't they?" comedic romance. Since it's so short everything can be easily read in a day and doesn't overstay its welcome. I liked it for the most part. The jokes about "he's eating too much" is a bit repetitive and overused.

I never understood why Spirited Away was regarded so highly. It's not a bad film by any means, and it's very pretty. But as far as Ghibli films go, there's a lot better films.

* - Yeah, it's a cheat since it's not a Ghibli film. But It's still a Miyazaki film.

I should watch more Ghibli films I kind of watched Nausicaä and (re-watched, sort of) Spirited Away like 1.5 years ago but somehow just sort of stopped there. I think I skimmed Mononoke but it didn't grab me really. started watching Kiki's Delivery Service but I forgot to finish it
now that they're on Netflix it'd be very easy to finally see these animes in incredible hihg quality

Re: im looking at anime
I watched Mononoke a while ago with friends, hadn't watched it in a loooong time.
It really wears its messaging on its sleeve, more than I remembered.
It's a fairly simple story about a 'traditional' prince and a 'radical' princess quite literally coming together to save nature from industry, imperial subjugation and teaching everyone the goodness of nature and preservation and the like.
I think where it shines is with the character of Lady Ebisu, who really just wants to provide a safe home and haven for prostitutes and the poor/sick. So much so that she gets manipulated into an imperial plot, but is eventually rescued by her people..
It also pulls no punches with the on-screen violence, and there's this awe-inspiring vibe (in the more classic sense) with how it portrays creatures and magic and whatnot.

Re: im looking at anime
Today I finished
and I wish it was better cuz it's the kinda show I'm predestined to really like.
In short it's a story about stories.
Here's the plot per Wikipedia:
He's a dumbass and honestly believes in fighting for justice in any way he can.
Then the story escalates like fuck and the theme of "narratives, what they mean, how people and their actions are influenced by them" starts working on multiple different levels like mass media, the press, idols, viral internet stuff, throughout 4 or so arcs.
It's kinda Trigger-esque, living in the same general area as TTGL, Little Witch Academia, but I felt like it never really committed to its thematic underpinnings. Nor did it have the sheer energy of the aforementioned.
It's at the same time a loveletter to and parody of tokusatsu shows like Kamen Rider, Super Sentai etc. and takes a toooon of the tropes associated with the genre, rearranges them, lampoons them, in such a way that kinda loses track of providing the protag with an actual character or humanity.
Everyone in the series takes the stuff that's happening completely at face value, much like characters would in the stories that inspired it. That's where a lot of the initial humour comes from, but then the characters act 'normally', so it never really crystallizes itself.
Maybe that's the point of it? idk
It also extends to the relationship between the three idol girls, which is... sincere? or sort of fetishizing? idk?? but the majority of my reads on that are not very positive so yeah.

Here's the plot per Wikipedia:
So our hero, inspired by all the shows he watched as a kid, tries to become an 'actual' hero for real.Male model Masayoshi Hazama decides to fulfill his childhood dream of becoming a superhero, despite having no superpowers or the technology to create a high-powered suit. He becomes the hero Samurai Flamenco and begins to fight crime in the name of justice. Police officer Hidenori Gotō finds out about Samurai Flamenco and his real identity by a twist of fate, which leads to him getting involved into lots of trouble, especially when they come across enemies that were not thought to exist outside of fiction. Nonetheless, these two young men will come face to face with hardships of being crime-fighters while discovering what it truly means to be a hero of justice.

Re: im looking at anime
This time on my journey through the Ghibli-verse I watched "The Castle in the Sky".
I somewhat liked the movie for the most part. I liked the adventure aspect and the overall images.
Plot-wise it had great moments but it could be definitely benefit from cutting it down to make it about 20 minutes shorter.
Some scenes displayed an excess of being unnecessarily dragged out, like for example the escape from the pirates and military.
