classic sonic has some of the worst music in the game because they really tried too hard to make it sound like it was from sonic 1 on genesis while also missing the range of that console's music processor. they still got some good music but yeah, it brings back bad memories of sonic 4 trying too hard to capture the appeal of genesis music while entirely missing the point

however, i will not hear anyone dissing the invincibility theme, because the chiptune fist bump is an incredibly powerful move, despite the rather short loop

I think it's less that, and more that they wanted to make a general theme for a given area, and then do different takes on it for each of the three characters + tag stages. Like, Sonic is instrumental, Avatar is vocals, Classic is trying to do a 16-bit take.
