ITT Recommend Good Visual Novels

Post by Perrydotto (?) » Tue Nov 07, 2017 4:55 pm

I made this thread before but then the forums imploded, so please post again, please and thank you. :yay:

I've played Phoenix Wright and I love it, and I'd really like to play more good visual novels, anime or otherwise. Just please don't post creepy dating sims or really offensive/bad stuff.

I've been enjoying the Danganronpa games; they're VERY anime and they unfortunately have problems with writing women, but they have some actually clever twists and turns and the endings are hilariously over the top!
I also suggest the Nonary Games/Zero Escape series, which are now a convenient bundle on Steam! And I'm meaning to check out Ever 17, which is an older VN from the same writer and apparently has a similarly built ending that turns the game around 180°!

Well, there's always Starswirl Academy, probably coming out at some point before Half-Life 3.

Seconding Ace Attorney and the Nonary games. I find it hard to recommend Danganronpa these days because the series has a LOT of problems.

Seconding this. It's very good, but hoooo boy, it's rightfully got a pretty heavy content warning.

Higurashi/Umineko/Rose Guns Days ( I'll restart the LP thread sometime probably) / Higanbana are all very good. Anything by Ryukishi07 is good

Doki Doki is a lovely game that you should totally ignore the content warning on :-I

Yep :-I

Definitely listen to what I'm saying here it's harmless :-I

But really it is good just it will get intense but you should still go for it

shut up about whatever that is imo

repeating the last-thread recommendation to play analogue: a hate story/hate plus (hate plus is the sequel).

Premise: the society on a korean generation ship degenerates into a deeply misogynist patriarchal society reminiscent of the joseon dynasty as a result of spoilers. Everyone eventually dies, also as a result of spoilers, and hundreds of years later you're sent to reconnoiter the recently-rediscovered wreck of the ship by talking to its two AIs. The story is serious and at times depressing but is very well done.

oh, weird autumn already mentioned these but WHATEVER

make no mistake, i encourage people to indulge in any sufficiently harmless thing they enjoy, however strange and erotic it may be

i haven't seen anything like overtly objectionable about those games (and i wish i could say the same for rabi-ribi because it is otherwise a fantastic game) but it's not hard to tell that they were made to indulge a certain type of fantasy that a lot of people are gonna find weird whether there's anything substantial about the games or not

i think what i'm getting at is that it's okay to just a) be weird and b) like things just because they have sexy cat maids in them

We Know the Devil is a great, off beat, visual novel that offers a vibe unlike pretty much anything I've played.
It's Mahou by way of Bandcamp Indie Folk Rock if that makes sense?

oh, don´t get me wrong. I don't mind people indulging in their fantasies. I guess I was trying to be facetious mostly but reading it over again I was maybe overly goony about it.

While I don't recommend everything that's been said, everything I might recommend has been said. Also, I conclude from the fact that no one has brought up Hatoful Boyfriend that it was overhyped.

Maybe everyone assumed Perry already played Hatoful Boyfriend since it has so many birds in it. :smirk:

nah you're cool

the other side of this is there's nothing wrong with a bit of self-censure as long as you're not neurotic about it, so no need to charge too far in the opposite direction

Also, your personal standards of what's 'overtly objectionable' may vary. I have not played that game, nor will I, but based on that screenshot I can almost guarantee that I, personally, would disagree with jill about that

That is a weird assumption to make, not like this is a VN specialist forum or something :v:

Hatoful Boyfriend is quite fun and silly

I recommended Her Tears Were My Light in the last thread so I might as well repeat it here. Short, free, good, and gay. What more could you ask for?
