Oh that. You should've been there for the Loot Cave in D1 before they patched it. Engrams for days.

I made a Titan. I'm really, really good at meleeing.

Heal myself, Regen ultimate, and occasional over shield when pressing R1. I love melee.

So I'm going to post my thoughts about the story below and try to clear up some Vex lore to make the story more understandable. SPOILERS obviously.

Osiris was a member of the Vanguard a long time ago in the City. He was Ikora's mentor, and one of the most powerful Guardians ever. However, he was also obsessed with the Vex, to the point that City finally had to banish him out of fear that he would lead the City to ruin with his ideas.

Osiris traveled to Mercury and found the Infinite Forest (the Infinite Forest is the massive machine that the Vex turned Mercury's core into), and was never heard from again until the events of this DLC. He has been traveling back and forth through time and different realities. His goal is to prevent the Vex from achieving their ultimate goal: the extermination of all life that does not fit "The Pattern".

The Pattern is what the Vex worship. It is their single drive to make everything fit their Pattern. It is why they have no hope, imagination, or fear. Anything that does not fit the Pattern is either made to fit or more than likely, erased from existence.

That is the unique power the Vex possess. They don't just kill life. They erase it from existence altogether. If you died tomorrow,
you wouldn't exist anymore but people would still remember you and what you did. The Vex take it a step further. Erasure means that you NEVER existed. No one will remember you. You will truly be gone. That is what they want for the universe.

So back to the story. Osiris saw something in the timeline that scared him, and he was unable to find a reality to prevent the "Dark Future" the story speaks of. The "Reflections of Osiris" is how Osiris is able to visit multiple realities and timelines and find a way to stop the Vex, but he was unable to do so. The Vex have "Minds" that each serve a function. Atheon, Time's Conflux was a Mind that was in charge of erasing anything that didn't fit the Pattern from reality in the Vault of Glass. However, there are Minds far more powerful...

Panoptes, the Infinite Mind, has control over all of time and space and is in charge of bringing about the Vex's ultimate victory.
It can rearrange realities at will and is the chief architect of the Infinite Forest, which the Vex use to "simulate" realities. They do this to better be prepared when they finally put their final plan into motion.

Your Guardian character is someone who was NOT in any Vex simulation or in any of the realities that Osiris visited. That is why you are the key to stopping Panoptes. If another Guardian like Osiris tried to stop it, it would simply either move to another reality where it won. In fact, that is what Panoptes is trying to do during the final boss fight. It is trying to get rid of you from this reality so that it can achieve victory. But Osiris, using the Vex technology he acquired during his travels, was able to stop Panoptes from doing that while you delivered the final blow.

The reason at the end of the story Osiris decides to stay in the Infinite Forest instead of returning with Ikora to the City is because,
like I said, Panoptes was only one Mind of the Vex. A very powerful one, but still only one cog in their machine. He stays to keep an eye on their future plans.

Now I will admit that this will not make sense to anyone who did not play the first game our read the lore, and that is something Bungie should have addressed in the story instead of just assuming that people knew what the Vex were about. But I hope this clears up some stuff.

Here are my thoughts about Curse of Osiris' story. The gameplay's fine as it always is, more things to shoot up, but here's what I thought about the story:

The more I think about it, the less it makes sense. You go to Mercury first to find Osiris' damaged ghost, then take her back to Earth to repair her. There's a temple there built under a radio station by Osiris' followers, and there's a slot there that perfectly fits the ghost to fix her. How did it get there? Ikora mentions that it's just a radio tower and they never found anything else, but the "temple" is literally just twenty feet down the elevator shaft. Not even a hidden door or anything, it's just a simple drop and there you are. Did they actually explore the station beyond seeing it in the distance and going "yup, that's a radio station"?

Then you get back to Mercury to go into the Infinite Forest, and I have to say the whole experience is kind of disappointing. There is so much with you exploring a perfect reality engine, but nothing ever comes of it other than you going through some stones floating in space and sometimes going to the past/future simulations of the universe. They don't really do anything with it. There could've been some cool plot point about you not knowing whether you're still in the simulation or not, or if the Osiris copies are also a simulation, but nope, just a really linear progression.

Then Panoptes (the main villain of the DLC) is namedropped like you're already supposed to know who he is, and he appears almost right after that. At the same time, you're shown a ruined version of Mercury and that the Sun is dark (either because they built a Dyson Sphere around it or they sucked out all the hydrogen, the game never says what), but at no point during the story is are you told why Panoptes, specifically, has to die to prevent this Bad Timeline from happening. Hell, the Strike bosses give you more of a reason to kill them.

So you faff around a bit more and break some Vex kneecaps until you get a map of the Infinite Forest. It's at this point where the Descendants and the Precursors start showing up, which are basically what the Vex used to look like and what their simulations say they will look like in the far future. Again, nothing cool or interesting comes of this; they're just Vex that look different and that's it. Bungie made a big deal pre-launch that the DLC would have all these timelines converging and Vex from all timelines showing up to stop you, which I guess is technically true, but it just happens in the lamest way possible.

You get kicked out of the Infinite Forest and then go back in with Ikora's help. She somehow opens the gate to the IF even though it took Osiris years, and you go fight Panoptes. You kill him, then the ending happens.

This is where things really started to fall apart for me. At this point I'm just going to start listing individual things that I had problems with at the end of the story.

Again, why do we have to kill Panoptes? Why the hell would we confront Panoptes on his own terms, in the simulation?

What was preventing him from just booting you out of the Infinite Forest, or better yet, just plopping you in some inescapable room?

There could've actually been some potential in somehow tricking/forcing him out of the Infinite Forest, where you fight him on your own terms. The IF's simulation is basically perfect, so how do we know we even killed the real Panoptes?

There's a throwaway line at the beginning that the Traveler waking up somehow set the Vex on their current course towards the Bad Timeline, but this is literally never elaborated upon.

Osiris doesn't have the qualities the characters assign to him. His ghost calls him an egomaniac, even though he comes across as pretty level-headed and even humble when you meet him. Others say he's basically insane, even though he's really not.

Where the hell was Osiris the whole time? You meet "reflections" of him in the Infinite Forest, and when they meet you they send word to the actual Osiris, which implies his reflections know where he is and that he should be along shortly. The actual Osiris doesn't show up until the very end, having not even actually participated in the final boss fight, then goes back into the Infinite Forest as if nothing had happened. What?

I know there's a lot more I had issues with when this was fresh on my mind, but that's all I can think of right now. I've been in the Destiny Discord too, and I've found my sentiments are almost universal. Almost nobody seems to like the story.

The biggest issue I have isn't even the writing (which is meh at best), but how the writers of it apparently did not communicate at all. There's a lot of telling, but almost no real showing.

I don't think I've bounced off a game as quickly as I have with Destiny 2. I had quite a bit of fun with the original Destiny (I bought an edition that included all the expansions up to The Taken King), although there were definitely problems with it. The mechanics of these games are solid, and it feels great to shoot stuff -- Bungie is excellent at that. I love the setting because I'm a sci-fi nerd, and you have this huge potential for so many stories and interesting missions. But it's not there. It's the exact same game as Destiny 1, but with a few tweaks. Even worse is the fact that I STILL don't have a reason to give a crap about anything. I don't care about the characters (with the possible exception of Cayde-6), I don't care about the enemies (you fight them all the same way), and everything is kept so mysterious it's infuriating. I know nothing about anything. I had hoped Bungie would include some lore in the game itself this time around, but nope.

As fun as the gameplay is, it can only keep me engaged for so long. The MMO-lite, loot-based system clashes with any attempt to make a more in-depth story, world, or characters, because you have a dozen Guardians running around in the background. Hell, your Ghost does all the talking for you, so I feel like an empty shell. You can't do anything that permanently changes something in the game and therefore makes what you're doing feel meaningful.

So I'm done with Destiny 2 and probably the entire Destiny franchise. It's not worth the time and effort.

Update on the loot boxes/Eververse situation in the game.

Bungie is going to start putting the ships, sparrows, and Ghosts as rewards in game that you earn by actually playing the game. It sounds like they will still be in Eververse, but now you actually have a way to get them without spending money.

Also, they are giving more "direct purchase options", meaning you can spend your Silver on the ACTUAL thing you want, and not a fucking loot box.

Some other highlights from their blog post:

1) They clarified what you can access with the base game. Basically, if you want to play new story missions, new strikes, new raids, new Crucible maps, etc. you will need to get the expansions as they come out. However, EVERY player regardless of expansion ownership will have access to the seasonal events (such as The Dawning and Crimson Days) and Faction Rallies/Iron Banner. They will also have access to the endgame playlists (like Nightfall).

2) They are still looking at XP gains. Right now they said it is "too slow and lopsided towards grinding specific activities". They are trying to find a fix that will make it so XP is quicker to earn and rewards players for whatever activity they choose to do, and not force them to do the same activity to level up all the time (like doing Public Events).

3) They talked about what will be coming out over the course of this year.
  • January 30th - The game will be updated with Masterwork Armor as well as changes to raid loot. Masterwork Armor works the same as Masterwork Weapons in that you need Masterwork Cores to make one. Masterwork Armor will provide you additional damage resistance during your Super, and you will be able to reroll the "armor type" of the armor. For example, if a piece of armor is Mobility focused, you can reroll it to be either Resilience or Recovery focused.

For raid loot, they are bringing back raid specific perks from Destiny 1. These are basically perks that are specific to the raid that the armor or weapons are gotten from. For example, the weapons from Leviathan might do more damage to Cabal, or the chest armor might allow you to do more damage to Bathers during the Bath Encounter. Also, you will now be GUARANTEED to get a drop from every major encounter in the raid (Baths, Dogs, Gauntlet, Calus, and Argos Phase 1 and 2). They are also adding Ghost shells with raid specific perks to the final bosses for both Leviathan and the new raid lair.
  • February - Nightfall will be getting a scoring system, and it will be replacing the time limit mechanic. Basically, it will give you points during the strike based on how well you are doing, and there will be a community high score page (as well as emblems) to keep track of how well you do.

They are overhauling the armor and weapon mod system to "reduce redundant mods, give them more unique theming, and greatly increase the impact on your power". They are planning for February, but it might be pushed back to spring based on various factors. They will also be looking at potentially removing mods from the Eververse loot boxes, because they "don't want pay-to-win outcomes".

The Quickplay Crucible playlist will have the game mode rules changed to increase the pace of gameplay and Power Ammo acquisition.

PC will be getting a new chat that will allow you to chat with other players that are in the Tower.

They are adding a fix to make it less likely that you will get duplicate Exotics.

They are adding a feature so that if you are in a fireteam in the EDZ, you will now be able to see your party members on the world map without having to ask where they are.
  • Spring 2018 - Crucible will be getting a Ranked Mode. There will be two types of ranks. Valor will keep track of your overall Crucible progress, and will NOT go down if you lose (if you win it will go up, faster however). Glory will go up if you win, and down if you lose, so this will be the "competitive" rank.

Private Matches will be added. This will allow you to bring your friends to a party and select a Crucible game mode and map of your choosing and play against each other.

6v6 is also being added as a separate playlist in addition to the 4v4 playlists.

Mayhem Clash (where all your abilities recharge insanely fast) is also returning as a seasonal event in Season 3 and going forward.

They will also add measures to make quitting players less likely to quit a game.

They are also looking at the sandbox to improve Exotics, weapons, armor, etc.

There will be a Multi-Emote wheel which will allow you to have multiple emotes equipped at the same time (4 instead of 1).

They are adding an additional 50 slots to your Vault, but admit that this is a quick fix, and they are looking at other fixes regarding Vault space issues. They are also adding a tab for your Exotic ships, sparrows, and Ghosts, so that you don't have to hold onto all of them in your Vault anymore.

They will also be adding Heroic Strike modifiers back into the game.
  • Fall 2018 (or sooner) - They have a general list here, but it includes "item collections and records, weapon slot and archetype improvements, Masterwork Exotics, better clan rewards, additional Crucible modes such as Rumble, endgame gear improvements, Trials of the Nine improvements, mass dismantling shaders, Guided Games, and solo vs fireteam matchmaking".

So I think I'll end up picking up this game at some point, if only to treat it as a singleplayer game. If they ever fix their dumb bullshit or whatever, great; otherwise, I'll at least have a game that I can periodically dip into whenever I'm bored.

For those who own a PS4, the base Destiny 2 is available for free in September with a PS Plus membership. Very helpful especially with Forsaken dropping tomorrow.

Also I'll be going dark for about a week. :crack:

So for those who do play, how did you feel about the recent reveal cinematic?

For those who don't know, Uldren, the main bad guy in Forsaken and the one who killed Cayde, got revived by a Ghost. This means that Uldren is now a Guardian like us. Also, because he's a Guardian, he will have no memories of what he did in his past life (Guardians can't even remember their old name). Meaning he won't remember killing Cayde.

What were your thoughts?

I have zero investment in Destiny, but honestly, good for them. It's still a bit of a wait-and-see moment for them, cause it might turn out that problems that plagued Destiny 2 were more on Bungie themselves, as opposed to whatever Activision wanted out of them, but maybe not. I'm cautiously optimistic that this will turn out well.

Nothing so far as is usually the case with departures such as these.

Jason Schreier confirmed on Reddit that it was just run of the mill people leaving before the next major project. Destiny isn't in trouble, especially given the recent Shadowkeep announcement.

They did say they aren't working on D3 right now, and that D2 will keep going for at least another couple of years.

I think that's reasonable, especially since they're moving to steam. Giving it a long shelf life on a new platform seems like a good idea.
