I'm probably most excited for Isabelle, since I love zoning/trap playstyles. Also because she's precious and deserves to win at anything she tries.

I like playing as Villager, but Isabelle is pretty much the better character.

Also K. Rool, Ridley, and Bowser... almost like I have a type. :ponder:

Of the new characters I'm most excited for Daisy, Isabelle, and Inceniroar.

Helps that Peach and Villager were already two of my favorite characters.

Also, what's everyone intending to do first - my plan is to jump right in with World of Light, I don't think I'm going to bother scanning amiibo to unlock things before that.

I get a kick out of how many people are super ultra mad about Bayo. People think she's broken and badly designed, but the reality is she just has a really high potential. Broken, to me, is when you don't need to be better than your opponent when playing as the character against another and/or can cheese fights. Bayo actually does in fact require skill to be good with.

Characters with a massive skill ceiling vs. everyone else are still somewhat of a problem since they dominate the competitive scene. If Bayonetta could win every single matchup, why would you use literally any other character? Tournaments could ban her like how basically everyone banned Meta Knight way back when, but it's still better for characters to not be so unbalanced in the first place.

Bayo being OP is pretty canonical to her games, and while she's not an instant win in Smash she's still very, very good even after all the nerfs.

I'm interested to see how things change for her in Ultimate, but I think Ridley shows that Sakurai is going to allow some characters to be more unbalanced (at least as it appears right now).

This isn't a datamine spoiler since he's been shown off in some media: I'm really curious about the situation with Rayman - as far as I can tell, he's the only third party character from a big publisher not associated with any other franchise in Smash who was just a trophy in SSB4, and is just a spirit in Ultimate. You'd think that if Nintendo were negotiating with Ubisoft for him, and given how good Nintendo's relationship with Ubisoft can be, they'd want him playable - or at least as an assist. (Indie third party characters being spirit only makes more sense)

EDIT: Rabbid Kong, Rabbid Peach, and Rabbid Mario are all spirits as well.

Persona Q came out on the 3DS, but otherwise the Persona series (including all the mainline games, as I understand it) has been almost entirely exclusive to Sony consoles. Does this mean Atlus will port Persona 5 to the Switch?

Persona Q2 just recently released for 3DS, and that features the Persona 5 crew as the main cast.

world of light tips:
- find bowser the molten crater dungeon in the top right
- find the great zapfish spirit in the power plant, head through the spooky forest in the bottom left
- enjoy beating most non-stamina matches with two well aimed smash attacks

world of light thoughts:
the structure of world of light feels really weird to me.
subspace emissary had its flaws, but it was good about showing off most of the new characters early - you get pit in like stage 2 or 3, and it keeps introducing the new characters from there
i've made what feels like significant progress in world of light (just past the crack of light), and i have simon now, but for most of the way up to this point, the only newcomer i've had access to in WOL is inkling.

event matches were all about working with the gimmick they throw at you
WOL is about mitigating the gimmick before the match with spirits

both SSE and event matches were good about getting you to try different characters
WOL provides no encouragement to switch.
and because most stages are in their omega or battlefield forms, WOL doesn't really help to learn those either.

the quantity is impressive, sure, and you can see the attention to detail with some of the fights. but because the focus is on quantity, i can't see it being practical for most people to go through the whole thing

World of Light spoilers (vague, but still):
Oh my, that penultimate battle - that came as a complete shock to me, and I'm glad I had absolutely no idea it would happen.
Not sure if it's worth playing through the rest of the mode to see, and definitely isn't worth doing a New Game+ to see again.
WOL spoilers (not vague, about a specific location):
I'm at 97% completion. I apparently missed something in Dracula's Castle, but I can't find it despite spending a while searching.

World of Light's hard mode does not fuck around. I started off on hard and have nearly hit a brick wall a few fighters in. I'm not sure yet if I'm crazy for doing this or if I just need to get better; admittedly, I am not a huge pro at fighting games.

Eh, I welcome the increased difficulty if it's a matter of being better at fighting; I'm mainly trying to figure out how much of World of Light is that vs. how much of its difficulty is grinding for spirits. A lot of the chatter I've seen on SA suggests the latter is a pretty huge part.

There's a whole lot of grinding, but if you're getting used to fighting games then it might be worth it for a bit - still, if you're going for 100%, making every battle a challenge is going to get very old, very quickly - while also differing a lot from regular fights due to spirits and the skills you unlock.

I'd put it as 85% grinding, 10% engaging content, and 5% trying to find where the fuck Richter is. (So no one has to repeat my mistakes: When you get to the area with the ghosts, make sure they're all dead simultaneously - you may need to go through once and then reset things. Seriously I was there for like an hour searching, going forwards through it, backwards through it, going backwards resetting everything, trying to enter every entrance that's just a background element)

Also, an annoyance (challenge spoilers):
There's a challenge for doing the final boss of World of Light without being KO'd. I was literally 4 hits away from doing it before getting hit with a full screen attack - and it's a really long fight. Might knock the difficulty down to Easy and try again later.
