IMPORTANT: Whitelist TRS in your adblocker!

Post by Perrydotto (?) » Tue Apr 03, 2018 8:24 am

TRS does not run any kind of ads, and never will (you kind folks support us on Patreon more than enough!). However, sometimes adblockers can create false positives based on the extensions we run in the forums software. You can safely disable any adblocking on the site to maintain all functionality.

For instance, currently, Ublock appears to block our media embeds:

Specifically, what's happening is that one of phpBB's developers uses GitHub to host and serve media embed scripts and HTML for various sites. One of uBlock Origin's default block lists recently decided that any embedded content hosted on github.io (basically, GitHub's public web server that each user can upload stuff to; think GeoCities but for the 21st century) needed to be blocked, which is why this broke all of a sudden.

So yeah, whitelist TRS.
This has been a public service announcement. :pinkietoot:

I was wondering why twitter embeds were broken :-I Mystery solved! If you're like me and couldn't find the whitelist option, "toggle the blocking of large media elements for this site" does the same thing in regards to fixing this.

That's dumb. Isn't ublock origin hosted on github? Just whitelisted github.io and now tweets work again. GG, ublock.

It looks like this little bodge of a workaround might not be needed any more, at least from my impromptu "clicking the thing and seeing if things broke, and they didn't" testing.

I have TRS whitelisted, but for some reason the embedded videos and gifs in twitter posts don't work for me anymore.

It works if you click on it three or four times. The console log shows an error that "play() failed because the user didn't interact with the document first. https://goo.gl/xX8pDD"

It seems to be a change in Chrome to prevent autoplay of videos that haven't been clicked on, and it's not seeing the first click. The forums media plugin probably needs an update to fix it.

FYI it's also now happening in Firefox as well as Chrome, despite me whitelisting TRS. The same workaround SlateSlabrock mentioned seems to work, though.

edit: Embedded tweets are suddenly working for me again (10:02 PM my time). Is this partially due to Twitter's API or something?

I use Pale Moon and I guess because it's based on an earlier fork of Firefox, it isn't having this issue, so I guess if things get really annoying that's an option :v:

I might go that way if Firefox keeps getting worse :-I
