The city of Citysville - LP Cities Skylines

Post by West Filly (?) » Wed Dec 20, 2017 2:50 pm

Image

In case someone here doesn't know, Cities Skylines is a city building game. We're going to be making a whole new settlement from scratch.

For those who do know, here's a list of DLCs and mods I'll be using:
After Dark
Snow Fall
Natural Disasters (Random Disasters ON)
Mass Transit
Green Cities
European Suburbia skins
Generic European skins
Placeable pedestrian crossings
A bunch of mods that just give extra data or add new building tools, which probably won't impact on the LP in any visible way.
.

Before we get started, I'm taking suggestions for the name of our new city. If it helps: It's going to be British themed in its appearance because it's what I'm used to IRL.

Okay I'm going with Cityville as the name for the whole city.

However, the game also gives me opportunities to name my city's districts and I can even name individual roads if I have time for that. I'll still need other place names to use. For example, In the same way New York City has Manhattan, there will eventually be subdivisions of Cityville.

I think Ponyville will be cool for a nice quiet suburb later on :3

Here's the blank canvas. Someone has already put a motorway in here for us, and someone many years ago built some nice ruins for us too!

Put down a few roads and zoned a few places. Green is residential, so people will now build houses there. Blue is commercial, so people will build shops and offices there. Yellow is industrial, people will build factories there.

Image

People need to poop, and the poop needs somewhere to go. At the moment this is the only thing the game lets us build. The important thing here is that I put the poop hole so that the poop is dragged away from everyone by the river's flow. Given that the water coming in to the village is being drawn from the river higher up, it's important to check the river's flow, as I learned the hard way the first time I played this game.

The building behind the poop sluice is our coal fired power plant.

Mother nature would be pissed with us right now.

Just noticed that they called the city Rennes even though I typed Cityville in the box. I'll mess around with the game file and get that fixed.

The population of the city will eventually surpass certain milestones, which each give a small cash injection and which open up new options to us. I've taken the liberty of adding new pieces to the village this time around, but ultimately it'd be no fun just watching someone else play this game. Later on, I'll be getting the thread involved in the decision making :scheming: As for now, I'm just trying to set up a generic and relatively functional settlement for us to have fun with down the line.

These are the last two buildings I'll put down unilaterally, and the last gameplay I'll complete today.

Now it's time for the city report :spike101:

Here I'll give an overview on the areas of the city we currently have stats for

CITY REPORT - May 24th 2018

Population: 1007 inhabitants.

Funds: 5184 buttcoins

Budget: Currently running a very small surplus.

Electricity: Cityville is using 27MW of its 40MW of available electricity. All buildings are adequately supplied.

Water and sewage: Cityville is using less than 20% of it's infrastructure's capacity in water provision and drainage. All buildings are adequately supplied and drained.

Garbage: All buildings are adequately emptied of their waste. Cityville has filled 200k units of its 8M unit capacity landfill, and is producing 22k units of garbage per week. No garbage is recycled or otherwise processed as yet.

Education: 251 of the school's 300 elementary school places are utilised. There are currently no High schools or universities. Cityville currently remains 84% uneducated, but this is normal for a new settlement.

Citizen Happiness: High in all sectors.

Health: No citizens in Cityville are currently unwell. All citizens have access to a clinic.

Police and Fire:

Crime rate - 6%
Jail capacity - 20
Detained suspects/criminals - 0
Fire hazard - Low

Traffic: No issues.

Leisure: There is nothing to do in Cityville! Teenagers are playing on the poop chute for fun.

Development: All zoned land is currently developed.

Stay tuned for the May mayoral elections! Here you will be able to vote from a number of (fictional) candidates. After I post some candidates and their pledges, you decide who you would like to represent Cityville as mayor for the next 5 in game years.

Brb while I create some fictional candidates.

Diana Faldingworth : Conservative Party

"I will focus on allowing our village to achieve its full potential. There is huge demand for growth in this village, and we must capitalise on that. I pledge to acquire the land adjacent to our current settlement and triple our town in size. There will be more jobs, more houses, and more people here proud to call Cityville their home.

And it's time we invested in the environment of this city. As the city grows, it must not grow wild or disorderly. Currently we can revel in the natural beauty surrounding Cityville, and that must be respected. As the city grows we must work to enhance that natural beauty. As the city achieves its potential, we will develop in a way that betters the view outside of your windows, putting parks and leisure at the heart of new communities within Cityville.

At the start of my term this will be a village with dreams of becoming a city, and by the end of my term this will be a city with a village's heart and soul."

(General views: Pro business, pro wealthy people, anti poor people, doesn't care about global environmental issues.)

Image

Barry Chopra : Labour Party

"What we need is a city that works: More jobs for our citizens, more houses for more people. What I want to do is make sure that, as the city grows, we have what we need to keep ourselves going: places in schools, new roads that get us to where we need to go, and new jobs to go to.

I will only acquire new land when we need it, and that isn't the case right now. We already have rights to the East bank of the river, and what we need is a new bridge to allow us to expand the industrial estate onto the East bank. With room to grow, our industry will turn Cityville into an economic powerhouse. Now I'm not going to promise that we'll grow into some kind of garden metropolis in the next five years, because my plans are much more realistic than that. What I will promise is that you will have what you need to get your kids to school, to go to a job, to live your life in Cityville.

... On the issue of Leisure, there will be more to do in terms of leisure in this city as it expands, but we can't have any of that if we don't first build the infrastructure it relies on. That is why, once the East bank is developed, I will introduce cityville's first bus service This will ensure that working people and young people can make the most of Cityville without need for increasingly expensive cars."

General views: Pro working people, Anti rich people, pro public services, ambivalent about environmental issues.

Image

Jennifer Townsend - Green Party

"The city is still young, and we cannot lose this golden opportunity to grow into a more environmentally friendly city. We all know that the world needs to lose its dependence on fossil fuels, and that we need to stop polluting our waters, but all other candidates have suggested putting this off. The later we leave it, the more the city grows in an outdated and environmentally unfriendly way. The more outdated structures we create, the harder it will be for us to make the changes we need to make down the line. It doesn't need to be this way. We can start to change direction towards a greener society. Let's start this now, here.

If elected, In the next five years I will ensure all of Cityville's electricity is generated from renewable sources. I will work towards a water filtration system that will keep our waste out of the river's ecosystems. I will build facilities that allow us to recycle our garbage instead of piling it up into landfill. I will design our new transport links to support walking and cycling. I believe Cityville has what it takes to grow into a city with a future, and not just a city of the past."

General views: Save the planet. Support local business. ...At any cost.

Image

Bill Turnip - Independent

"We got a lovely village here, let's not screw it up. NO NEW HOUSES, NO NEW SHOPS, NO NEW NUFFINK. If you elect me, I'll make sure not an inch of land gets built on. Also maybe get rid of that sluice. It's an eye sore and when the wind blows north it smells o shite!"

You have until 6PM EST to vote. Mark your votes with ## like you're playing Mafia. You can also ask questions such that I'd answer from the point of view of the candidates.

Now this isn't quite representative of UK elections, as mayors are appointed annually by their councils. However the councils are elected every 5 years, so you can see how this might be a de facto way of working.

Then you have London mayoral elections that use their own crazy rules.

I vote Barry.

Also, because of the way the game was coded last I played, I had to intentionally remove education opportunities from parts of my city, because the industrial park requires uneducated employees to stay open. I named those districts "Poorsville" and "Shitsburg".

In Game Date - May 28th 2019

Image

It has been one year since the mayoral election. How have things changed under the governance of Mayor Chopra? Here's an aerial view to get a feel for what's new. Note that in all of these maps North is to the viewer's right.

First view: a plain aerial shot of the city

Image

Second view: names the different districts of Cityville.
Image

While different laws and policies can be applied to different districts, these districts have simply been made to give points of reference. The dotted square around this image shows the land available to us. Land outside this boundary can be acquired at a cost.
.

Third view: shows new developments since the election last year.
Image Everything shaded in pink or labeled in black was built after the election.
.

As promised, Barry has built a new bridge (pictured at the top of this post) to the East bank, where a vast industrial zone has been developed to the South of the new bridge. Also as promised, there is a bus depot on this East bank development that serves the entire town. To the North of the bridge there is a long commercial zone called the Waterside, and a basic residential development called Eastside lies East of the waterfront. This has all been achieved without acquiring any new land rights.

Most of the development of the town center is an expansion of the residential zones there.
A new roundabout has been installed, replacing the original highway connection. This is in order to improve the flow of the road, as this is currently the only access point to the motorway for Citysville.

Barry's approach has been to keep public services topped up in advance of any shortfalls. Barry has increased education budgets by 10% which has prevented a shortfall in elementary school places. Barry has increased electricity budgets by 21% to prevent blackouts and has built two new coal power stations to keep up with demand. There is a new water tower serving the new West side developments. Cityville's first High School and first Cemetary have been built in the town center.

The population currently stands at 4023

If this all sounds positive then wait. When I wake up later today I'll make a post about the city's current issues :-I .

One thing that amazes me is how detailed the water dynamics in this game are. You can flood areas with dams and create canals that divert the flow of rivers. You can create new lakes by opening surplus water sluices. Also, BEHOLD

Image

Notice the brown? This game simulates the dispersal of poo in rivers and oceans.

Aside from the rivers running brown with detritus, what issues are there with Citysville at the moment? In order to ensure I don't fill this page in the topic with too many images I'm going to spread this out across many posts.

Health issues in Eastside: The cost of having heavy industry on your doorstep

Image

Each of those skull and crossbones icons marks a house in which a recent death has occurred. Three deaths have occurred within 5 days of each other. All these deaths have occurred at three houses within yards of one another, and all of these houses border the Industrial estate.

Statistics collected by the Cityville central clinic show that health increases proportionally with distance from the Riverside Industrial Estate. Or, more accurately, the closer you are to Riverside Industrial Estate, the more likely you are to require the clinic's services. This is thought to be due to the chemicals and pollutants the industrial facilities produce. We're not talking about the carbon dioxide emissions, but the fibrous materials and harmful liquids used in many factories in the industrial estate. Is it any wonder, then, that three deaths have occurred so close in time and location?

Jennifer Townsend, a local environmental campaigner who ran in last year's mayoral election, spoke with reporters today.
"It is an absolute tragedy what has happened to three hardworking citizens of Cityville. While there is a wider issue surrounding the ways in which our environment and our health are intrinsically linked, all I would like to state right now are my sincere condolences to everyone who knew and loved those who lost their lives."

William Turnip, runner up in last year's election wrote in on these issues. "Building a whopping great big clothes factory next to a house is a bloody stupid idea. What did they reckon were going to happen? Christ alive! If I were mayor now this wouldn't have happened, that's for sure. Like I said: NO NEW HOUSES. NO NEW NUFFINK.

"Barry's Bridge too Busy" says citizens

Image

Traffic has been building up on the new bridge, and often this causes tailbacks that lead down the entire length of Goon street down to the highway roundabout. The new bridge is the only way to access the East bank of Cityville, where the majority of the City's commerce and industry is carried out (and is thus where most of the city is employed). As most of the residents live on the West side, most residents will traverse this bridge as part of their daily commute.

Conservative party former mayoral candidate Diana Faldingworth has been talking in length about her proposals of building a new off ramp from the highway leading into the East bank. "It is embarrassing that the city has spent so much on constructing such a ridiculous bridge when the river is already bridged by the highway itself." She says, adding "Each day our citizens spends trapped in traffic limbo is testament to our current mayor's incompetence."

Cityville is incredibly dull

This map shows accessibility to leisure facilities. As you can see, there's nothing to do. It seems Barry is all about making a city that "works" and not one that plays at all.

And let's not ignore the big issue.

4000 Butts are Pointed at Cityville's River

Not only this, our sewage outlet is nearing its maximum capacity. This means that another outlet may need to be opened to keep up with the output.

Participation Time

Firstly, I want suggestions for names of our current river. I only ask that they are not acronyms, because I don't think "the river PPPP" rolls off the tongue.

Secondly, before I get into the next few years of this city and to the next Mayoral Election, I want to say that I'm open if there's any information you want. This game is incredibly detailed, meaning there is probably something I'm overlooking. There are all kinds of graphs and charts which I don't have the time to go through and post every time I update on the progress of the city. If there's anything you want to see or ask about relating to Cityville then now is a good time. Like "hey can I see the population graphs" or "what does the budget look like?" "Are there natural disasters?" "What does Barry think about the poop?". Doesn't matter if the question seems stupid I'll answer to the best of my ability. The main reason I'm saying this is because I'll have to scale back the amount of information I give about the city as it becomes bigger and more complicated.

Also Maybe you have an idea to improve the city or improve the LP. Maybe you have an idea on the creative side like a candidate for the next election. If there's anything you can think of, don't be afraid to post, talk among yourselves here or whatever. If there's something you think would be cooler in secret then hit me with a PM.

Finally, what do you think it'd be like living in Cityville?

Don't forget: River names.
