Here is a cool map of the city that a neat mod to the game lets me output

Image

I drew in red where the traffic jams are. I also put some purple crosses over certain footpaths to show that they are footpaths and do not allow vehicles to travel along them.

The dotted line at the top of the map happens to be at the Northern city limit.

Because Labour didn't win in the last election, we don't own the land North of the city to build a bypass as Makosi was promising. The game limits the amount of land cityville can purchase in proportion to the population. Dave bought land for his dam and his big radio dish, meaning we are at the limit for the land we can buy right now. We don't own the land above that dotted line, nor are we able to buy it right now.

A northern bypass is not possible.

Therefore your votes count  !

So how is Dave going to get around this one?

Goon Street has access to the highway and therefore has access to the new developments. This was Cityville's original link to the highway.

Diesel Drive connects to the industrial estates, which have a link to the highway, but they also have the link to the new bridge I put in earlier. That bridge was intended for industrial traffic to head into Damtown's commercial developments without needing to use the highway.

Nethiah street crosses all the residential roads of Eastside, collecting their traffic and connecting it with Picard bridge so it can go down to Goon Street and the highway.

Riddick road was intended to give workers in Eastside access to the industrial estates in which they work.

Now what's happening? People from Eastside are using Riddick Road to access Diesel Drive and get to the commercial developments through the industrial estates. Some are also using Diesel Drive to access the highway onramp Barry added to the industrial estates all those years ago.

Image
Pictured: traffic pouring into Riddick Road.

Image

Pictured: non industrial traffic making use of the industrial estates highway onramp with the new bypass bridge in view in the background.

The reason we're not seeing tailbacks on Lapis Lane as we are on Riddick Road is because its entrance from Diesel Drive is a one way leading out of the industrial estates. This was done to ensure that Barry's Bridge could flow more easily than if traffic were crossing its traffic from multiple directions.

I admittedly just kinda wanna see what makes Dave's laissez-faire attitude crash and burn ultimately.

I forgot to mention. Traffic has been so bad in the city that hearses haven't been able to clear dead people out of Eastside's apartments for weeks. The police have only barely been able to deal with crime in Eastside.

That said, the guy with the engineering degree and a bunch of engineering friends will engineer an engineering thing because giving your friends money is good.

Nethiah street and Picard Bridge are now big wide boulevards.

Image

Which lead into...

Image

A giant freaking tunnel under Ponyville roundabout. Which comes out at...

Image

A raised road which runs in the center of the road that connects the cloverleaf interchange with Lumbermill roundabout.

And that connects into the road itself.

Image

Note that the rightmost lane was selected over the leftmost lane for the outgoing traffic because the vehicles want to go straight over the cloverleaf interchange and not into any of the slip roads.

We got ourselves a warning for a thunderstorm.

Because Dave built fancy meteorological equipment, we can see which part of the city is going to be hit.

Image

I thought that meant the city was safe, but apparently an unrelated fire broke out in the wooded area between Ponyville and Eastside  .

Here's a few dope shots of the city burning while there's a lightning storm in the background.

The weather radar was saved by a fire truck that drove over the dam and all the way down the back roads to get to here.

After the storm ended, the fire raged on.

Image

But Gerard Way turned out to be way too popular. Everyone was trying to go down Gerard Way's tunnel, leading to serious blockages.

Image

Due to the traffic issues, one of Eastside's towers collapsed in the fire.

FYI Cityville now possesses 8 roundabouts, and is well on its way to being a true representation of British city "planning"

cities: skylines has taught me that i don't envy anyone tasked with keeping traffic under control in a growing city

it's really easy to say stuff like "they need to do something different with this intersection" but it's really hard to actually change anything when there are already homes and businesses everywhere that would need to be shifted around like fucking domnios to actually make any improvement

In the UK it's basically impossible. The cities here are filled with super special old buildings that are too historic to dare demolish, but the centuries old buildings have centuries old roads that weren't intended for the modern car let alone what the city has become.

With a few mods this may be possible

I've never played this game, but I'm curious: how successful are attempts at "utopian" cities? You know, ones that are perfectly symmetrical and gridlike and all that? :ponder:

You can build cities with pretty patterns in the roads, where everything's nicely lined up or symmetrical and shapely. How well it works depends on whether it's done well, but it can be done. I've seen someone make a city with concentric circles that have circles intersecting on the inside of the circles so there are no straight roads, and it looks something like an old gothic stained glass window.

I was trying to find the link but couldn't find it. I did find one guy's dystopia, however.

We're about to enter an election period. There are a few things which have happened before that, but there's going to be a bit of a gap between the updates and the candidates. The good news, then, is that you'll have some time to catch up.

I'm spending some time learning about city planning and how to make good roads, both in a game sense and in a real world sense. This involves some reading. It also involves some savescumming so I can see what works in the next few years before it actually happens in the thread, and go back to the save if it doesn't work. I want the next election to have some options that aren't just "slap another bad road on it" which is what has been happening.

Cityville has been built badly. The first mayor decided to work as compactly as possible, and the second mayor is a bit of a doof. Also the player is a bit rusty on the game :-I . The next election needs a few options that are tried and tested, and that will actually work, because I can tell you now that Cityville's traffic situation is on the brink. The game is programmed such that things fall apart if vehicles and people can't get where they need to go, so I need to know how to solve this problem.

At the same time it's no guarantee that things won't crash and burn at some point.

I have some ideas in mind. Some sensible, some unusual.

Some Figures

Remember that Mayor Dave started in April 2023. The election should have been held in 2024, but was brought forward following Barry's resignation.

Population

Image

Population has gone from just below 22,000 to about 23,000. While it did climb to about 26,000 during this term, a lot of the gain was lost during Eastside's messy roadworks at the start of 2026.

Death

Image

The city is experiencing a lot of deaths. There aren't any plagues or poop related illnesses to explain this at the moment. Deaths are at about the same level as they were during the Sewage Scandal, although this isn't a per capita figure, and is simply the number of deaths that week plotted for each week of the year.

The deaths seem to hit the new areas much less than they do the existing areas, and Eastside is pretty much dropping like flies.

With the deaths and the redevelopment, Eastside now sits at roughly 5000 residents. Meanwhile Damtown and the surrounding areas also have about 5000 residents, with plenty of room to expand. It's no surprise that, with Barry gone, Eastside is no longer the center of the city as it were.

Money

Image

Dave's initial investments began to pay back hugely, enough to pay off his loans. Recently, however, Dave has squandered the huge amount of accumulated wealth.

Image

The orange line is the amount of taxes collected. The yellow line is the amount of money the city paid out on its budget. This means that the gap between these two lines represents the surplus or deficit at the time. It looks like Dave initially created a huge surplus, but then closed it back down toward the end of this term.

What did Dave spend all that money on?

Image

A new bunker for Damtown, with a fancy building next to it that people can visit. This also has a radio that broadcasts emergency signals.

Image

A new housing development in Damtown. Notice that this development has slightly taller towers than the rest of the city. These will continue to grow, where the rest of the city will stop at its current height.

This housing development has some very expensive fancy gardens out of its West side.

This city is horribly broken on account of my not being able to play the game well. There's nothing that'll catastrophically fail per se, just that traffic is so bad that the vehicles often give up and despawn.

I've spent some time in the past few weeks getting better at this game, and I just look back at this city like "good lord no".

My plan right now is to keep improving my understanding of this game and then come back when I have something functional and interesting to show.
