Ask me anything about rocks
As Ponygoons' resident rocktologist, and now that I am situated firmly at home, I am now open to any questions anyone may have regarding rocks. So, go for it.
I would post the rock emoticon but its a bit too sexy for me.

You know that song by ELO, "Turn to Stone"?
Could that... could that, like, really happen?

I may be going work on a deep sea drill ship. Is that considered violence against rocks?

Yes. Many lives have been claimed by this very process. Do you know Stonehenge? Tread carefully.PictishBeast wrote: ↑Tue Apr 01, 2014 9:46 pmYou know that song by ELO, "Turn to Stone"?

This is exactly what I do for a living. It's not violence against rocks, it's freeing them from their oceanic prison.reidransom wrote: ↑Tue Apr 01, 2014 9:48 pmI may be going work on a deep sea drill ship. Is that considered violence against rocks?
You'll have to be more specific here. Many different rocks have many different tastes, with many variants of wine to accompany them.
Excellent question. My rock of choice is eclogite. It has a dazzling red and green appearance, given by the olivine-rich ultramafic material from the lower mantle and garnet inclusions. And because it comes from far below the crustal surface, it sometimes transports diamonds. It is truly a magnificent rocks, and proves that metamorphic rocks are the best rocks.shotgunbadger wrote: ↑Tue Apr 01, 2014 9:48 pmI love rocks.

Yes. Bentonite clay. It's essentially clay with volcanic ash mixed in, making it extremely absorbant. Ever walk across a layer of bentonite? It's like quicksand. It almost caused me to fall down a mountainside too. Fuck bentonite.

Igneous, Sedimentary, or Metamorphic? Which is best and why?

Are you familiar with the JOIDES Resolution and Chikyu? That's where I may end up, one or both of those at times. It's very exciting
Also, what's the most fun part about core samples?
And bentonite is pretty useful for clarifying wines.

Can rocks dream?
If rocks could dream, what would they dream about?
Why did my pet rock run away?

What are your thoughts on concrete? Does smashing up a bunch of rocks so we can make buildings strike you as barbaric?

Beautiful symbiosis. Also, since they tend to cling on to specific types of rock, they make identifying formations in the field easier. Nothing cooler than seeing bright orange and going "aha, that's the Wilson Limestone!"dilettante wrote: ↑Tue Apr 01, 2014 10:06 pmLichen on rocks: beautiful symbiosis or disgusting parasitism?
As above, metamorphics are the best, because they are (often) a combination of all three. It takes already interesting rocks and and warps them and make them even more interesting. Metamorphics are often also the most beautiful.Igneous, Sedimentary, or Metamorphic? Which is best and why?
Roth was getting all of the attention due to his flamboyant personality, making mainstream audiences overlook the rest of the band, including Van Halen himself. This caused tension in the band, and Roth decided he could just do better on his own.Why did David Lee Roth leave Van Halen?
I've heard of JOIDES, we once had them out on our rig. Core samples are fun because they give you a full picture of a given rock column. Much more detail, you can usually trace back specific events in them. Are you familiar with the JOIDES Resolution and Chikyu? That's where I may end up, one or both of those at times. It's very exciting

I dislike cement; they sometimes show up in my samples after a casing run. They get in the way of the real rocks. Tip: you can distinguish cement in these situations from real rock using Phenolphthalein: if you pour some on cement, in turns purple. What are your thoughts on concrete? Does smashing up a bunch of rocks so we can make buildings strike you as barbaric?
Yes, they can. They dream about abandoning their owners. Your rock was simply fulfilling its dreams. Can rocks dream?

What's a really cool thing about rocks that people don't know, or something that you can drop into a rock conversation to sound smart?

Certain sequences of rocks give a record of the rising and receding of sea levels; these are essentially place markers of the earth's orbit around the sun as it goes through periods of being closer and further away.BartonFink wrote: ↑Tue Apr 01, 2014 10:21 pmWhat's a really cool thing about rocks that people don't know, or something that you can drop into a rock conversation to sound smart?

In a fight between all rocks, what rock would win. Allowed: rolling, breaking, melting, exploding, hiding
Not allowed: biting, fishhooking, erosion
