i regret saying nice things about The Missing and I hope Deadly Premonition 2 bombs harder than the first one. You’re a hypocritical piece of shit, Swery

Asking people to not dead name someone isn’t “propaganda” and caring more about your twee sub-sub-sub-Lynchian-and-True-Detective type characters than actual people’s feelings is assholish

Maybe your games wouldn’t bomb if you could get the frame rate above 15 fps, have things to do that control well and are actually fun instead of janky and an impediment to fun, and weren’t attempting to be an “auteur” when all you do is rip off other people’s work

edit: this is a counterproductive and angry post, but that’s how I felt at the time, so, leaving it and people can read it or judge it or scroll on by or whatever.

Yeah, I initially gave him credit for the “oh, i fucked up, it’s entirely my fault” post - sure, it’s bad that this shit made it in and he didn’t have trans consultants unlike The Missing, but at least he seemed like he was trying to do better. Then he awkwardly removed one instance of deadnaming, leaving the entire rest of the game (and now making that initial scene even worse in some respects, because the character now deadnames herself first), and then took the worryingly Linehan-like approach of yelling at trans critics.

So yeah, I did want to check out The Missing at some point, but that’s not happening now.

You know the feeling when you play through a very good game and they say at the end of the game to wait for the sequel (with the word "soon") and then there is no sequel after two years of its release.
I haven't been so disappointed in a long time and all the hype I had at the end of the game vanished in an instant.
It's the VR game "Moss".

Moss is a nice and charming VR 3rd person light puzzle platformer with some direct interactions with the environment and enemies. You control a tiny mouse named Quill with the goal to rescue her uncle.
Despite being released before Trover Saves The Universe it is far better realised in both gameplay and story.
Also you can high five the mouse at several moments in the game.
I WANT THE SEQUEL NOW!

Are you looking for games specifically about queer experiences, or just about characters that happen to be queer?

Hm, good question. I guess about queer experiences, but i don't mind if it's also games that are just about characters who happen to be queer.

i have also done my own search on the subject and have come up pretty short.

Searching just "queer games" will just net you a bunch of articles about queer games as a thing and maybe the queer game tag on itch.io (which itself is useless because there's no way of knowing which of these games is worth looking into and there's a lot). The occasional list you find will also just include games like Mass Effect, Dragon Age or Gone Home as examples.

searching for "queer games that aren't visual novels" nets you the usual "if you don't like visual novels these will change your mind" articles along with articles praising queer VNs or just lists of queer visual novels

variations of the the two give you more or less the same results.

And also a tweet of a gay dude complaining about the same thing and getting dogpiled for not liking visual novels.

Some of the comments in that tweet did at least try to give some suggestions instead of dogpiling him:

mibibli's quest
Get In The Car, Loser!
Even the ocean

SLARPG was also mentioned in one place, but I already knew about that game.

So yeah.

Shit's kind of dire if you're not into vns or twine.

I think you're underselling itch.io's search a bit. You can sort by popularity and filter by a million things. So if you only want to try out the top two windows platformers that were tagged with both "queer" and "LGBT", you can do that.

I admit, it's quite possible all the non-vns you find there are bad, I just mean if you pick a genre you don't have to dig through itch.io randomly.

I've never used itch.io, tbh, so all i got was google taking me to a page full of games. I'll look into it.

Am I just missing it or does itch.io have no option to exclude tags? The only thing i've found is a clunky workaround using the url.

Edit: Well, one way is just entering random other genres, so I guess that does the trick.

it kind of depends on what you mean by 'queer games' because not all games made by queer artists have a narrative driven by queer issues, while others only touch on them and others don't. like is stardew valley a queer game just because it supports queer relationships? undertale for having a gay couple as a boss? celeste for implying the main character is trans?

either way here are two good games themed around queerness; they still won't beat you over the head about it:

https://hexecutable.itch.io/beglitched
https://owch.itch.io/palace-of-woe

the trend seems to be that if you're not making a VN you are probably focused more on videogamey things that don't have a lot to do with queerness and/or overshadow it and make it seem incidental. that's not to say it always will, but reflecting such things in game design is kinda newly-ventured territory. and in a manner of speaking, people rarely let themselves be defined by their queerness, so the games we want to make on a usual day aren't much different

Assuming you're referring to the limited digital release of Super Mario 3D All-Stars, I'm not sure it's "bad" so much as completely and utterly mind-boggling. :psygum: Three of the greatest games in history getting brought together from three disparate consoles and being touched-up for modern play is already a guaranteed seller, so Nintendo doesn't need FOMO to drive sales. The best I can guess is that someone thought it would be fun as a commemorative "I was there" item for Mario's 35th anniversary, but I think you would do something like release a print run of the game with a special cover or something, not cut off both physical and digital sales within six months.

Exactly that.

But see, if they just sold it they'd make money, but if they make it limited and get that FOMO going they'll make all the money.

Not if it's going to be sold at the price people were already expecting; otherwise, they're leaving money on the table by not selling more copies. Unless they're secretly planning to pose as their own scalpers, pretend to buy all the copies, and resell them for $200 each.

The only other take I've heard so far that seems plausible is that Nintendo is going to have N64 and possibly GameCube emulation ready to go on the Switch in a year or two (or on their next console). If this game is available for a long time, then maybe that would hurt subscription rates to Nintendo Switch Online or whatever the next-generation equivalent is, whereas this way they can implicitly spin it as, "oh, did you miss Super Mario 3D All-Stars? Don't worry, you can play 64/Sunshine if you subscribe to our service!"

Nintendo Switch Online is rather cheap, enough to where I wonder if it's even profitable. The least efficient plan is $4/month, already pretty low vs. similar services from Microsoft and Sony, and that drops to $4.38 per year if you and your friends work together to get a family plan. Still, maybe they're hoping to bait people into getting the individual monthly plan for a quick dose of nostalgia, then expecting those people will forget they're subscribed for years to come.

Re: General gaming superthread

Posted: Thu Sep 03, 2020 3:20 pm

If that is their plan, I'd say it's more likely the other way around. People won't be inclined to buy this collection if they know the games will just be available for free a year from now. And in the meantime, optimizing those emulators for two specific, popular games and then charging money for the results is an easy way to generate a quick return-on-investment for what is likely to be a non-profitable venture in the long run.

Because, compared to the Virtual Console, the NES and Super Nintendo emulation has been a good value for the money, even if you subscribe to Switch Online just for that feature. Such a good value that, as you say, it has probably netted Nintendo next to nothing. That's going to continue if and when they add another system or two to the mix.

I was never against having to pay $5 a pop for classic games; I just objected to them only being available on one system before you have to buy them again. And that $5 price tag was the main reason the Virtual Console amassed such a large collection of titles, particularly third-party ones; it's hard to convince people to pour money and effort into something that's basically going to be free.
