Vita got to 300,000 sales in its launch week in Japan alone this really doesn’t look good for StadiaAria Genisi wrote: ↑Thu Nov 28, 2019 12:40 amFrom a few days ago: https://www.gamesindustry.biz/articles/ ... 175k-times
The Google Stadia App is required for setting up the service to begin with, and buying games. Also, yeah, you can only get one kind of Stadia via the $130 "Founders Pack", as the other options for signing up with Stadia aren't available until 2020
So while keeping in mind that there is the $130 buy-in limitation, as well as that everyone is required to use the Stadia app (and unless they have an activation code from buying the pack, the Stadia app can't do anything), we can look that as of a week ago, November 21st, the Stadia app has been downloaded about 175,000 times.
Even considering the $130 buy-in that limits the amount of people who theoretically would be using Stadia, and assuming that all of the recorded downloads accounts for people who bought the "Founders Pack", 175,000 players for a console launch (because this is the closest thing we can compare Stadia's launch to) is extremely dire.
To help put it in perspective, I looked up some sales numbers for consoles that are notable for being commercial failures. I'll list them below, alongside the estimated numbers for Stadia.Granted, this is only Stadia downloads from the first week of the service's launch, and I'm comparing them to lifetime sales of actual console hardware. Once more options to run Stadia besides the $130 "Founders Pack" start showing up, we can expect the numbers for Stadia to increase by some measure.
- Playstation Vita - about 16 million units sold
- Sega Saturn - 9.5 million units sold worldwide
- Sega Dreamcast - 9.13 million units sold worldwide
- Nokia N-Gauge - about 3 million units sold
- 3DO Interactive Multiplayer (3DO) - 2 million units sold
- Atari 5200 - about 1 million units sold
- Nintendo Virtual Boy - 770,000 total units sold worldwide
- Tiger Electronics Game.com - less than 300,000 units sold
- Atari Jaguar - less than 250,000 units sold
- Google Stadia - over 175,000 app downloads
But even still, *just* 175,000 is dire numbers for something that's aiming to become a major video games platform, even for a limited launch like this.
(lol)

But the pictured controller doesn't have a button labeled "Start". This is just like "remember something about a competitor?"
Very math.

Meanwhile, Nintendo is sincere with the hidden "THX2 ALLGAMEFANS!" hidden message on the Switch Pro Controller.

It feels like Stadia is entirely directed at the 90s kids market.
I don't mean people who grew up in the 90s, I mean they are marketing to people they need a time machine to reach

I'm disappointed that the description for Wave wasn't something like "We still have no clue what this thing was supposed to be."Madeline wrote: ↑Fri Nov 29, 2019 7:10 amJust keep an eye on this space

Wave was mostly lofty ideas and technobabble, but Google did incorporate what they learned about collaborative editing via Wave into Docs and the rest of the G Suite.

I guess you technically win the betting pool for not saying less than two.
Also, as a perfect end to this shit story, the cancellation came without any warning to the developers working on games for it, and that went over exactly how you'd expect.

They couldn’t even be bothered to do the bare minimum for their business partners. Why would anyone buy into their ecosystem when hey either kill everything ASAP or actively make it worse (Chrome, YouTube, Mail, etc)?

They do seem to have reached the point of being persona non grata even among tech nerds. I swear I know more Linux people who have iPhones than Android at this point.
