3D Ponies with Probable 3D Printing

It's lovely, darling! (Fanart, Fanfics, Pony or not Pony. If you're creative, post here!)

3D Ponies with Probable 3D Printing

Post by pessimizer (?) » Wed Oct 21, 2020 4:42 am

So.
I started making ponies in Blender.
And hopefully I'll be starting to 3d print them soon!

Anyway, have a happy Rainbow Dash:

That's pretty cool!

Dashie as a print!

Still to be painted...

Each grid square is 5 mm.

The model in the OP had me wondering if anyone was working to make full-color 3D printers affordable to hobbyists. It turns out someone has gotten pretty close at $1600 (their larger one is $2500 - pricey, but less so than I was expecting):

https://www.xyzprinting.com/eshop/en-US ... /ColorMini

I have no idea how good it is, but it is pretty interesting that prices have come down that far.

One more pony. This one is directly referenced from Pony Entertainment System (PES) by xbi

I would tilt the head upwards slightly if I printed this again...
When you set her down somewhere, you can't see her face very well.

Also to be painted... and of course she is still missing a mane and tail.

Hm, I have to say that - as of right now - color printing doesn't really sound appealing to me anyway.
I want to post process (e.g. sanding, painting to get a different finish, maybe adding some non plastic parts such as hair, ...), and there the color it was printed in doesn't really matter.
But if you're not into post processing, then I suppose that's an option.

Well, some forms of post processing might still be feasible depending on the technology in question. The DaVinci printer looks like it applies color to the outer surface, which would likely limit what surface treatments you could do without messing it up.

I got some painting done. And it turns out it's harder than expected...

About the process:
After wet sanding, I used an automobile spray filler, followed by further sanding in order to get a smooth surface.
Then I used acrylic paints for the colors. (I didn't have any dedicated miniature colors though...) Especially the white took many coats to cover the underlying blue PLA.
I settled on drawing the eyes with an assortment of black markers, some of which flowed pretty terribly.

Dash suffered a severe accident when the varnish melted away the black of her eyes... She's still smiling though.
I refrained from doing the same to the Famipone.

The painting is far from perfect, but considering this is the first time, I'm pretty okay with it.
Another thing I did not anticipate is having to wait for the paint to dry... The filling and priming easily takes up a whole afternoon.

Also, the Famipone was intentionally printed without hair so I could glue some on. Straying from the reference, I chose a fluffy pink and purple yarn.
Although superglue turned out not to be ideal for putting on the hair, it held up okay.

So here they are:

I sculpted another pony and printed it. The model is 5 cm tall (about 2 inches).
This time, referenced from https://www.deviantart.com/cmaggot/art/Hi-again-428352434
I suppose it's Derpy, but I haven't decided yet if I will paint her like that.

One thing that bothers me is, that her head looks way too small in person. On the photos it looks OK for some reason.

And of course she will get a mane and a tail.

Another print.
This time, it's Scootaloo, from this drawing by xbi.

I had to print this one twice, since I got the balance wrong the first time, so she couldn't stand – let alone fly :nngh:. Poor chicken.
And that, even though I computed the center of mass, but I only checked whether it was behind the foreleg. Somehow it didn't occur to me she could fall over to the side...
But now I'm quite happy with how it turned out.

Anyway, this will also be sanded and painted.
Maybe I'll even make the whole CMC trio!

Well, I painted a Scootaloo and Midnight Premiere's OC. Though I didn't have the right Colors, so the mane is red rather than green...

This time I used the following process:
After wet sanding, I used a spray primer, and then followed up with a primer paint to fill the corners. This took a lot of coats and took several hours, again, because it is really hard to cover the blue PLA underneath.
And then I painted them with cheap water-based brush markers. That's definitely a lot easier than acrylic paint, but it always turns out kind of patchy looking.

Anyway, here are some pictures:

Meanwhile, I made some more ponies: Apple Bloom (2x) and Sweetie Belle.

They were painted with acrylic paint, except for the copper color, which is some kind of model paint.

The copper Apple Bloom also has magnets in her hooves, so she can walk on ferromagnetic surfaces.

You've really done a great job with all these models.

I'd love to try something like this with my printer sometime. :)

Thanks!
I kind of stopped posting here, but I'm still making stuff.

If you want to print them yourself, you can find all my models here:
