wikiFizzbuzz wrote: ↑Sat Aug 01, 2020 3:07 pmI'm a little surprised that anyone would make a game out of this. As I understood it, the main thing that sets the 24 Hours of Le Mans apart from other races is that it's a test of the car's endurance first and foremost. Sure, the drivers all have to make sure not to crash the car over that period, and being able to go fast matters too, but when a big part is how well the automakers behind each car built it to last, I'm not sure how you work that into the game.
Le Mans wasn’t the only track that was available and you had multiple time lapse options to choose from in every race, so you didn’t actually have to do the most grueling marathon if you didn’t want to. I did it because my mom had just gotten diagnosed with cancer and I needed something relatively mindless to keep my mind off of the fear.
IIRC your HUD told you how well your tires, gas, and general durability were doing. You could try to push as many laps as you could without making a pit stop, but then you’d be prone to having an accident and being set way back or losing outright right away because your tires exploded or you ran out of gas or the engine broke down. So you had to make strategic decisions about when to make a pit stop so your crew could fix up your car, which added in an element of realism and tension without getting into Gran Turismo levels of obsessively tuning every spring on your car. The graphics were really lovely for the time. I guess the closest comparison I could make is Burnout Paradise without the crashes, or maybe Forza Horizon without rivals or changeable radio stations.
The PS2 version tweaked some stuff and also added in Daytona Speedway, where you could do another marathon race if you wanted to.
The thing about marathon races in the game, even if you’re only doing the super time lapse 30 minute ones or whatever, is that paying attention to how your car is doing is the most important part of the game. You can be a lap ahead of everybody and still lose if you’ve been ignoring pit stops. You’re obviously gonna memorize the track over that many laps and you’ll also get used to how the AI drives depending on the difficulty you picked, so it turns into a zen thing where it’s mainly about you, your car, and watching how the time and weather change around you.
Obviously not a game for everybody, I just really enjoyed it and wish someone would make another lite sim-related marathon racing game like that. The controls were fantastic and you could take your time to learn how your car handled so you could really perfect every turn. You could do drafting behind other racers, you had drifting mechanics that felt like a good compromise between arcade racers and sims, you had a day/night cycle and changing weather, it just seemed really amazing back then.
of course, it could also be rose-tinted glasses and the game aged like curdled milk, that’s also possible. wouldn’t be the first time!

Race Driver: GRID from 2008 featured Circuit de La Sarthe and you could race it from 12 minutes, to an hour, to 24.
The game didn't have pitstops, tirewear or fuel consumption, so there wasn't really any strat to it other than 'go faster than the opposition'.

btw I will not post in that accursed thread. i don't give a fuck. i will not submit myself to whatever that hellthread has to offer since from recollection the show itself was just kind of eh, bland, meh. style of nonsensical anime that you forget you even watched. literally about the only bit i remember was that uhhh no wait i forgot. that's how mindubnumbingly tieresome that dad gum show was.
but also not the worst anime ever btw otherwise i woulda remembered, fight me. fuck.

Re: ITT Post Your Random Thoughts
I'm always fascinated by how, in older cartoon series, it's not unusual for one person to voice every character. Mel Blanc in "Looney Tunes" is the most notable example (although even then they had other voice actors involved, most of them uncredited), but in studios like Terrytoons it was very common for a series to have just a single person voice everyone and everything (Lionel Wilson was the sole actor in "Tom Terrific", while Dayton Allen voiced everyone in "Deputy Dawg").

Are there union rules that would prevent a cartoon from doing that today?

Re: ITT Post Your Random Thoughts
And yeah, this was because it was cheaper to pay one actor vs. multiple (and Terrytoons was a notoriously cheap studio run by bean counters), but it's still remarkable relying on one person for a whole range of voices.

Re: ITT Post Your Random Thoughts
Mark Evanier talked about this a bit, but over time the union did set a rule saying that, after a X number of characters the actors gets paid more for each role. You can, in theory, still have one actor voice everyone, but they're now required to pay more than the base salary they would otherwise get for 1 or 2 characters.Mechanical Ape wrote: ↑Mon Aug 03, 2020 8:45 pmAre there union rules that would prevent a cartoon from doing that today?

Re: ITT Post Your Random Thoughts
Another thing is newer cartoons can have a much larger cast, compared to older shows which had fewer characters on-screen, so having one person voice everyone became impractical.
This also made the gender imbalance worse. If the sole actor is male, then it's practical to have every character be male. If they do have a rare female character the same male actor does her voice anyway, with mixed results.

Re: ITT Post Your Random Thoughts
Of course, with all that said you still get a cartoon where a handful of actors do multiple roles anyway. How many characters did Billy West voice in "Futurama", for example? In the case of "Beavis and Butt-Head" it's easier to list characters Mike Judge DIDN'T voice.
Then, of course, there's Tabitha in MLP. She has quite a range.

There should be a special format for distributing music that has an intro followed by an infinite loop, like the majority of video game music. It wouldn't have to be complicated, just a container file with two separate streams in any valid audio format. And then it could be an additional option on all the game distribution services that offer soundtracks, along with a way to play them. Steam could just build the feature into their app, and sites like GOG could have a standalone player you can download. The stop button would always induce a fade out rather than an abrupt stop, since you'll be using it a lot.

I think I've fallen into a sleep schedule that's generally in the ballpark of "sleep for 5 hours, wake up and not get back to sleep for 3 hours in the middle, sleep for 3 more hours". It kind of adds up, but is probably not good.

'tracker' music already supports this. .mod, .xm, etc all have this function. It's just too bad they aren't as popular as they could bePocket wrote: ↑Thu Aug 06, 2020 3:11 amThere should be a special format for distributing music that has an intro followed by an infinite loop, like the majority of video game music. The song that was part of that controversy where a major music producer just stole someone else's song to use as their background was a tracker song too. Which makes it pretty incredible that they just randomly stole the song when it's such a niche thing to start with.

Re: ITT Post Your Random Thoughts
In high school I used to take a midi, and make a tracker song that replaced some or all of the instruments with a small publicly available wav file. For example, I recall taking a midi of Chrono Trigger's "At the Bottom of Night" (夜の底にて) and replacing all the instruments with a soundclip of someone saying "boron" (very similar to the "US" pronunciation at the Cambridge dictionary). "boron boron bor'n bor'n boron bor'n..."
