Re: The Garbage Dump: 100+ pages of well-aged compost
Random question: You know how robo-callers are impossible to catch now for some reason? Is it because they can literally claim to be calling from any number, even one that's already in use by somebody else? Or do they have to at least legitimately own the millions of fake numbers they're calling from? Like, if somebody were to write their numbers down, put them in a central database, and then employ a machine to robo-call them right back and leave really, REALLY nasty, threatening messages... would it actually go to them and not random innocent people?

Call ID can be faked to whatever they want. So your callbacks will go to innocent people. On top of that, if you're enough of a shit to the wrong one, then your number is going on the fake ID list.

I think I learned about faking numbers when I spotted somebody using a 555 number. Seriously.

OK, followup question: Do you think it's irresponsible to even block individual numbers, then, knowing that they could coincidentally belong to real people who might want to call you at some point? Possibly even important people, like your doctor or something? Hell, I could see somebody setting up a fake telemarketing system that deliberately spoofs numbers of local individuals and institutions to trick people into blocking numbers that they shouldn't.

you are extremely overthinking this. that said blocking individual numbers that almost certainly will not be reused is also kind of a waste of time. I still do it for any calls that come from like, the UK or wherever but deep down I'm aware it's a waste. unfortunately they've learned how to spoof Finnish numbers now so recently I accidentally ended up answering to onePocket wrote: ↑Sat Aug 22, 2020 2:46 pmOK, followup question: Do you think it's irresponsible to even block individual numbers, then, knowing that they could coincidentally belong to real people who might want to call you at some point? Oh, so this isn't just a US problem? Interesting. I've been blaming a combination of the American telecoms and the FCC for letting it happen.

I wound up getting a call blocker that would block numbers from my same area code and dialing prefix because I literally never get calls from there, except telemarketers.

I feel like I lucked out being home-schooled when "Charlie the Unicorn" became a meme, because if I was in high-school I KNOW my classmates would have called me like how those unicorns did in the cartoon. "Hey Charlieeeee, let's go to Candy Mountain!"
Also "Charlie" came out in 2005. Damn

So one of the projects I've been mulling over is a series of biographical comics about Japanese-American animators who worked in the industry. People like Iwao Takamoto, Jimmy Murakami, and the ilk.
Would anyone find that interesting?

Re: The Garbage Dump: 100+ pages of well-aged compost
Welp, floodgates opened about the animation company I used to work for and their shitty business practices.
I worked with them for more than 2 years and my relationship with them deteriorated towards the end. Needless to say, seeing everyone talk about their shitty practices out in the open is VERY satisfying for me.
I'll probably write about my own experience with them eventually, but suffice to say a lot of what's being said I can verify is true.

I was starting to get disillusioned around my 2nd year or so, but I (naively) stuck around figuring I could use this as a stepping stone to get a better storyboarding job elsewhere.
Yeah....that didn't happen. Lessons learned.

Re: The Garbage Dump: 100+ pages of well-aged compost
But you were wondering what contributed to my depressive episodes last year, it was because I was dropped by them. I stopped getting work after production dried up for their 2nd cartoon (which is a story of itself) because it wasn't doing as well as they hoped. I later asked what's up and they said they dropped me because my style didn't fit with their vision anymore or some BS.
I'm already insecure about my art, and I was basically being told I wasn't good enough for literal stick figures anymore (the series is stick-figure animation).
But they offered to give me another chance...if I took a storyboard test. Keep in mind I boarded for a combined 30 cartoons at that point, and now they wanted me to take a fucking test.
I decided not to take it.

We'll see if they actually follow through on it, but if they improve the pay rates, good on them.
There are still other issues besides underpaying artists that needs to be fixed, from my memory of working for them, but that's a topic for another time.

Is there a way to pay a speeding ticket online? I have the citation on my bedtime desk (nightstand?) so I don't forget to deal with it but they haven't mailed the actual letter to me yet, perhaps because the mail is busted right now or perhaps because there's a 30% chance any given piece of my mail is going to end up in someone's slot, bc I live in a weird little thing on someone's property (long story).
It's an infraction. I was in lane 1 anyway. I owe them like three days' worth of paychecks and then we're good. Someone tell me how to pay. Can I just mail a fuckload of greasy ones in a cardboard box and they can send me back the difference at their leisure? I just want to crime to go away so I can live my life already. I want to forget about the time a cop talked to me, but the alleged courthouse apparently thinks it's the 90s, unless they have a website that accepts debit.
fucking goddamn government out here drinking the blood of the working man and it can't even send me the pail to put my blood in w/o messing up

Depends on your state, but my county has a website where you can look up citations and pay them. Yours might have the same.

Re: The Garbage Dump: 100+ pages of well-aged compost
If you want to pay online, I can almost guarantee you that your county/state government will be working with a third party payment processor that'll add a few percent on top, plus maybe a bullshit "convenience fee" or whatever. Write your government a check and you can at least avoid that.
Or, as you said, you might live somewhere that doesn't even take online payments at all, in which case you might need to pay it at ye olde courthouse or some other county office. Your county's website should at least have information about that.

In my state you can pay online if you have the citation number and there's no convenience fee if you pay from a checking account directly (but there would be for credit card).
Very math.

Yeah most tax stuff you can pay online for free with a direct debit from a bank account, but they'll hit you with a fee if you use a credit card. I have to imagine paying citations is similar.

Re: The Garbage Dump: 100+ pages of well-aged compost
why does the US government/individual states make paying speeding tickets pointlessly difficult
surely it'd be in their best interest to make it as easy and simple as possible, unless the goal is to hit people with extra fees and fun consequences for being late. here the cops just print you a standard invoice as your ticket.

Re: The Garbage Dump: 100+ pages of well-aged compost
Over here, anything that makes things at all easier for those who break the law is seen as being "soft on crime," which can be political suicide in the more conservative parts of the country. And more late fees means more money for the government, because raising taxes (also political suicide in the more conservative parts of the country) is so unpopular that many state and local governments count fees and fines like this as a significant part of their annual revenue.

Re: The Garbage Dump: 100+ pages of well-aged compost
My father got a speeding ticket a long time ago, got mail with a photo from the speed camera, then he had only to do a simple bank transfer with a special code in the note field. That was all what he had to do. He also could pay it in person at any police station.
Making the payment process more complicated or more cumbersome is super counterproductive. In the same vein you could increase the ticket costs, make the process easier, and with the easier process you can save on processing costs as in personnel and the avalanche of other processes as a result of not paying. It would have probably the same result in "profit" without antagonizing the citizens.

But, you see, ultimately the cruelty is the point. Our right wing takes collective joy in the suffering of anyone they can put down, even for something as minor as speeding.
