S09E03: Uprooted

Post by Wayoshi (?) » Wed Apr 10, 2019 10:43 am

The Young Six respond to a magical summons from the Tree of Harmony, only to learn it has been destroyed, and it is up to them to figure out how best to memorialize it.
This thread is for discussion of the episode. This episode airs at 11:30 Eastern / 8:30 Pacific on Saturday, April 13!

Official preview clips and images are okay to post, as is speculation about the episode.

Isn't Twilight's castle itself a new tree of harmony, since it sprouted from a "seed" from the tree?

I like the Student 6, so I am looking forward to this one.

That's what I was thinking when I first heard this synopsis. That, or the Tree's spirit grew strong enough to live despite its "body" being apparently destroyed.

The next 24 episodes will be all about killing plants from the Everfree Forest. Or they pull out a The Legend of Korra and Ponyville will live with magical vines in their town.

#SaveTree

Y'know, if the tree was the only thing holding the Everfree in check, and the tree's still dead... what's stopping the Everfree currently?

Did the princesses just leave once Sombra was defeated? Or has Starswirl been there all week with a flamethrower?

Random guess: The shards of the Elements will be the seeds they plant to grow new Weeds of Harmony. Hell, plant one in every kingdom, just in case.

I liked this one very much. Good student ep, and now they have a place to hang out.

I was afraid Yona was just going to be comedy relief at first, but it was nice to see her be the voice of reason at the end and come up with a solution.

The Thorax cameo was nice as well. Image

We had our first student song, and it was pretty good.

I am optimistic for the future of the students too. Image

Even in its final hours, the show still has surprises, just as Twilight described the Tree.

I really do like what the show's doing with these six. With FiM having gone on for nearly a decade, a lot of kids will have grown up with the show, seeing the Mane Six go from strangers to friends to heroes to leaders. But those kids in the audience still have much of that journey to follow in their own lives, so as the end gets closer, I think the students serve as an inspiring reminder that there's still room for more heroes in the world. Their story will largely be unwritten, seeing as we have so little time left, but I think it's for the best. It leaves their future open, just as our futures are too.

I'm excited to see what becomes of the Tree of Harmony going forward. I've said before that it seems to me like it's the closest thing Equestria has to a god, and with its first six followers having performed the ritual to restore its physical presence, it returned and built what looks to be its own temple. I feel that by the end of it all, it's going to be responsible for putting the sun and moon into a regular orbit once Celestia and Luna retire.

It was ok. It kinda moved too fast without enough character beats. But that's just because the Student 6 just never get as much time as I would like probably.

OK episode. I just wasn't really getting into it.

Also feels like they're ignoring Twilight's castle, which is the same thing as the new Treehouse.

Was fun to see the student 6 having fun, and Yona continues to be the best. Kind of meh song though.

I'm glad the Student Six finally got their own song. :scootatrue:

I'm also glad the hiatus is over. PONY IS BACK, Y'ALL. :twasnothin:

Okay, I’m going to level with y’all. Last episode I went into Part 2 wondering “what if this is still Twilight’s fear dream?” And the weirdness of the episode that followed? The crazy and arbitrary plot points? The melodrama? It all fit in really well with that theory. I literally made it to the ending credits before realizing “oh shit, this all actually happened”. And I’m still getting used to that. So I’m starting this episode in a weird place, epistemologically. Let’s see what happens.

• Non-pony Wonderbolt is cool (wonder if Gilda ever tried out?). But on the other hand, it does seem like they’re giving memberships away like candy now. Like it took Dash a bunch of seasons, and she’s really really good at flying, yo. But no shade at Silverstream. She did good. It’s all love over here.
• Oh for Pete’s sake, then we GET a dream sequence and I don’t even notice. :facehoof:
• I thought the Tree was dead, but here’s VI Twilight come to warm us about the Reaper menace. That was a Mass Effect reference just now. Because I’m very topical, you see.
• I like how “hold hands and think of friendship” is a viable suggestion in ponyworld. :ponydrugs:
• Gallus knows the permission slip game.
• How does Griffonstone still look shabby? Clean your rooms, griffons!
• On the one hand, it seems bad pacing for the creatures to all go home and get signatures, so they can come BACK and continue the plot. But on the other hand, this montage is super charming. All is well.
• You know, this is the second time on this show a beloved tree has been destroyed by a villain. Zecora is now eyeing her house nervously. (She lives in a tree right?)
• Is pony show really doing a 9/11 monument allegory? Never forget :equestria:
• That museum belongs in a museum! :applejargh:
• Yona’s on the ball, as usual.
• “I know the tree would have liked that!” - a normal thing to say in a normal world
• Song!
• Ha, they should do the gag where they slam the door and the whole house collapses.
• ... or the whole house turns into a crystal tree playset, that was unexpected :starity:

Can I just mention that I appreciate the detail that cyber-Twilight is flickering in the beginning when she assembles the dream team?

Rewatched the episode and man the overuse of the word "everycreature" is really grating. :nngh:

If only Sandbar had been Southern-sounding instead of being the son of hippies, we could've had him saying the far more natural "all y'all" in these cases.
