Blinding Ray rolls perception.
Radiant Rose rolls deception.
Ray thinks he has a fairly good idea of what the patrol routes are. It largely consists of one group of fliers patrolling the entire perimeter, some smaller circles patrolling each campsite, a group of earth ponies and unicorns that just sorta roam about in a relatively straight line throughout the camp, and the few watchtowers which don't seem to change guard at all. You also notice that anyone lucky enough to be in a tent or shelter is likely asleep or not moving, which could mean they'd make a good hidey hole so long as no alarms are blaring.

Radiant on the other hoof gets a bad feeling about this as the unicorn smiles wickedly and canters up to her. "Of course, sister, you may observe and bask in the rites." He swishes his tail against you in a very pony-ish but extremely uncomfortable fashion, faintly pushing you forward towards where the other acolytes have gathered by the fire. "Come, sit, warm your bones, our Queen will ensure you are cared for."

You have a really bad feeling about this. :nngh:

With no other option besides blowing your cover, you gather by the fire where the unicorns meet you with murmurs to each other and sinister looks. The rites begin when a unicorn (they're all unicorns) acolyte with a scar across an eye tosses a bundle of herbs and flowers into the fire. You have time to recognize drakewort, but the other multicolored flowers could be a lot of things. Smoke rises up from the flames, you hear the glow of magic, and for a second you think you see the form of a dragon rising from the smoke.

He speaks in draconic. "We offer earth and its life so that thou may consume. Taste of the land upon over which thee will soar." He throws some salts into the fire, conjuring a bright green flame. The winds picks up, and the smoke blows upon Rose... who coughs and sputters, but manages to avoid any severe side effects. Her eyes become watery and itchy, though.

Another acolyte steps forward, magically brandishing a dagger. The first acolyte speaks, "We offer blood of the magi1, so thine thirst may be quenched and the pact sealed."

They all raise a hoof. You feel compelled to do so as well, either by peer pressure or some other sinister influence. "We offer ourselves, our lives, and our magic to thine cause. May you return upon molten wings and thunderous zephyrs, to lay claim to the land that was once yours.

In the heart of the fire you can swear you see a face. Or a head, many heads, coals hissing at you as the wind picks up more. You feel nauseous, the heat getting to you, forcing a sweat that only freezes you in this cold temperature. You feel like passing out, like you've been drained of your magic, but you manage to fight through it and steel yourself to this suckstorm of terror.

"Hail the Dragon Queen!"

A few minutes later you find yourself still close to the fire, looking into the coals, wondering if you can still see anything. You don't think you can, but you still don't want to move. It's warm by the fire.

Radiant licks her suddenly dry lips, wondering if she just got hit with whatever made the cultist unicorns the way they are, and really really hoping that she didn't. Experimentally thinking a few rebellious thoughts at the Dragon Queen and mentally going over her spellcasting to see if things are intact, she casts her eyes around to see if any other unicorns looked like they also felt drained.

She hopes she looks unobtrusive.

It's dark and cold and Gothic figures she's had just about enough of this nonsense. She gently taps the lock on her cage, silently popping it open, and slips out. She considers bringing the blanket with her, but decides it would be too conspicuous if she did, so she quietly closes the cage door and looks around for some kind of blanket or cloak she can wrap herself in.

Bottle watches the whole ceremony with a level of terror that is entirely new to him. He feels a bit weaker from the same wave that affected Radiant, and does _not_ like the feeling. After the ceremony is over, he casually walks over to Gothic's cage, noticing her slip out. He uses message to contact the rest of the party. "They're all distracted right now. It's the perfect time for a diversion. I can break a lock, then Gothic can lead the prisoners out while I pull away the rest of the cultists."

Aaand just realized Bottle's in the wrong position, but too lazy to change it. :v:

You actually notice a lot of ponies seem this way... either this way or a horrifying inverse of it where they're driven to a constant state of noticeable tension, a few pones with their horns lit at all times just to stay warm and active, but while still looking drained and pallid.

You manage to escape soundly, but there are no fabric supplies around in this area, or nothing you can find anyhow. However, you do spot somepony very important. Brown earth pony, copper hair, cutie mark of what looks like, through this fog, a cup of water. He's tied vertically, forehooves in the air and belly exposed, bearing several or more whip scars on his side. He seems... quiet, oddly calm about the whole ordeal.

You actually catch a whiff of smoke if you're close enough to watch, but you shake your head and make horsie noises and nothing happens. Bottle is by the prisoner tents (1) and the griffon there has actually fallen asleep, and the other earth pony doesn't seem to care as he stares on dead ahead at the prisoners.

It's 2 hours and 30 minutes until daylight. Give Ray another hour and he's pretty sure he'll have the patrol routes of every pony and other thing in this camp.

Probably. :areyousure:

Radiant sends a Message out to Bottle. "No luck on the fires as a distraction, unless someone else has a better idea. Too many pegasi around to keep it going without extra flammable fuel, and in this damp weather either. I haven't found anything of particular importance they'd all rush to try and save, either. I'm going to see if I can find what ingredients they put into the fire for that ceremony, maybe see if it has any influence on the cultists or their prisoners."

Radiant looks around casually, trying to discern which acolytes have the little packs of herbs, and wondering why the acolytes her party took out didn't seem to have any. Maybe its something they specifically take out just for the ceremony? In the meantime, she also looks around for the shortest path out of the area around the fire, preparing to run if the other cultists seem to have caught on to her.

Speaking of which, the other pony said it was a summoning ceremony. What did they summon?

"The brutes," Gothic quietly mutters to herself, scowling. "This isn't very e/i at all. Can they even do that?" Gothic frowns, thinking, and takes a step toward the lashed pony before stealthily taking off and perching on the nearest vantage point she has, using the tops of whatever structures are around as cover and keeping an ear out for any movement in the fog as she approaches him from above.

That last question is a mystery that burns in your mind this entire time, but your arcane know-how tells you it wasn't a physical summoning, not like some Summon Monster spell a mage would have tucked away in a spellbook, but more of a spiritual summoning, akin to a wendigo's influence or something. You'd think more about it but your throat feels dry and your head hurts every time you think about that figure you saw in the smoke. You recall most closely it's eyes, you counted ten of them, all embers in the smoke, seemingly staring at you.

You're feeling like this right now. :fear:

You do manage to hit the jackpot, though, and find a full alchemist's laboratory with the alchemist in question missing. In addition to finding a satchel of herbs identical to the other, this place has everything you could use to make various potions or even a bomb. Your mind drifts towards the latter, really. Only problem is it'll take time and a roll. You might even want some assistance, either people looking out or playing sous-chef if you want a minor boost to the roll.

Available recipes! :excite:
Potions:
Celestial Decoction (Cure Light Wounds potion) - Easy Difficulty - 10 minutes to make
White Honey (Cure All Poisons/Toxins) - Medium Difficulty - 20 minutes to make
Full Moon (Medium HP heal, can raise HP above maximum as temporary HP) - Hard difficulty - 30 minutes to make

Bombs: :getinkie:
Dancing Star (Fireworks, essentially. Can blind enemies) - Easy Difficulty - 15 minutes to make
Grapeshot (Medium Phys Damage) - Medium Difficulty - 30 minutes to make
Dragon's Dream (Large Fiery Explosion) - Hard Difficulty - 45 minutes to make

You sneak around some more, avoiding a guard patrol without much difficulty. Only problem is there are two sleeping guard drakes by the captured pony's side, meaning it won't be easy to get too close. You'll have to come up with something.

Radiant stuffs the satchel of herbs into her pack for future analysis and looks over the alchemy equipment.

[Cantrip]: "Ray, did you see that ceremony? Hopefully you didn't get blasted by whatever I did, and hopefully that didn't do anything to my head. Anyways, I've found some alchemy equipment over here. Let's see if we can't make something that'll help the escape? I'm thinking we should go for a Grapeshot bomb, or go for broken and try to make a Dragon's Dream bomb."

It takes longer than expected, but after an hour of delicate chemistry you have a hardened clay sphere filled with highly flammable material. In that time Bottle and Gothic can take a number of actions, but know that you're running out of time.

About an hour and a half until sunrise. Make that time count.

"Nice one, Ray! We did it! Now let's figure out the rest of this break out."

Radiant casts about for the biggest group of sleeping cultists and/or flammable supplies like food or camp equipment to throw the bomb into. Preferably far away from the rest of the prisoners. She messages the other party members about their new equipment and asks for suggestions, one at a time.

Gothic eyes the sleeping drakes, considering how to best get rid of them. She could try to knock them out, make sure they won't be waking up any time soon... but given how thick a drake's skull is and how much trouble she'd be in if she got caught between them, it doesn't strike here as a particularly smart idea.

Not that the idea she goes with is a whole lot smarter, because what she does is grab a rock off the ground and perch herself somewhere relatively safe and hidden, where she scopes out an exit route and a few additional hiding places she can retreat to if needed. Then, once she feels good about her positioning, she scoops the rock in her wing and tosses it at one of the drakes.

Southern Gothic rolls Deception
*THWACK!*

Yeah, that got his attention one way or another. The drake immediately lifts its head, giving a guttural growl. He chomps on his partner to wake them up, then hisses a couple times. The other one hisses in response. They get up and start to lurk around... eventually moving in opposite directions to search the surrounding area, but giving you a clear path to the chained pony. He seems very weak, and while the noise of the drakes caught his attention at all, he simply looks down and winces.

You stay hidden in the fog. You can approach and converse him if you want, or even attempt to free him. You have the feeling those drakes are going to come back soon though...

Once she's sure the coast is clear, Gothic stealthily swoops down in front of the pony. "Stay quiet. We only have a moment before they come back, so I'll be brief. Do you need me to get you out of here? And would doing that be of much help, given they're bound to raise the alarm once they see your gone? I realize this is not the most elegant rescue you could ask for."

The blue-eyed pony simply looks at you and nods. He motions to the binds on his forehooves.

"We must take the others as well." That is all he speaks.

Bottle talks to the group via message. "If you want to get people out of here, I can create a distraction." In the meantime, he enters the prisoner tents, slipping by the griffon, to examine how easily breakable the locks on the cages are.

Unless Radiant contacts them and she ferries messages back and forth like a pony phone board.

Which, I guess, since she's Messaging the other party members about suggestions for what to next, she kinda did? She hasn't gotten any suggestions for the bomb yet!

Radiant's mind is getting fizzled ferrying these messages back and forth, and everyone is feeling a bit of fatigue, but especially Radiant who had to go through that emotionally and socially draining ceremony.

The locks on the prisoner cages are sturdy, but look like they're not too complex. Also, Bottle has found a few carts while roaming around, the best options being a single-horse cart that could carry two ponies at best, or a two-horse cart that could carry at least double that number. Whatever the case is, you'll need someone with a good bit of stamina behind... at the head of those carts, especially if you intend to go at full speed.

Hour and fifteen minutes left until sunrise. The fog is starting to disperse, looks like you won't be able to rely on that anymore.

Guard drakes are still away, but might return any minute. You have to decide if you will free him now or later.

Radiant wonders if Bottle and...Ray? Might be up for some cart pulling.

She also wonders if it would be gauche to leave the post-battle clean up to the others and take a sabbatical.

She votes to free him now. Time is short and let's not try to stage a break out when all the guards are up and prepped for an execution.

This is your approximation of the patrol routes so far, minus the fliers who are all around, but can hardly be seen thanks to the fog.

It's now the final hour. Sky's getting brighter, time may be a little more hazy until dawn. :flutterdear:

Bottle looks around to see if anyone is watching the prisoners in the tent, and if not, he tells the prisoners to wait for his signal before doing anything. He tries smashing the locks, and if that fails, he tries picking them. Once that's done, he goes to grab a nearby cart and bring it next to the tent. "Ready", he sends to the team.

Gothic hears the distinctive sound of a brawny drunk going around smashing locks, or at least thinking about it, and gets to work releasing the tied-up pony. "Well, that decision's made for me," she mumbles with the rope in her mouth. "This is about to get a bit messy, I think" she tells him once she has him free. "Do your best to keep safe. We'll get everyone out of here, or be horribly maimed trying." She takes flight and tries to circle around the area, following Bottle's trail and trying to run interference on the guards before they can raise an alarm.

Radiant quickly takes what she thinks might be rare, interesting, or useful in the apothecary lab (nothing too heavy, of course), then sets up piles of flammable materials stashed in various corners of the lab.

She then gets ready to detonate the bomb that she and Ray made, and then run to rejoin the rest of the group.

First off, once Bottle starts smashing those locks, the hostage moves south towards a blindspot in the patrols, sneaking around to the south-west side. He moves fairly quickly and gracefully despite a clear limp in his back-left leg.

Bottle breaks the locks after a good thirty seconds, but the bad news is that's woken up or caught the attention of the two nearby guards.

In addition, Autumn can spy another patrol heading towards the prisoner tents.

Bottle can see the two guard's shadows coming up upon the tent.

The guard griffon you met before manages to get off an "Oy, you better not-" before being interrupted by what looks to be... another griffon? Yes, one swooping down on him and pinning him to the ground from what it looks like. The earth pony is holding a spear at the two but is hesitating. What the heck's going on out there? :rariwhat:

Ray can likely get in position to see what's going on and or knock a few heads about, otherwise it'll take 2-3 turns for Radiant to catch up with the team since it's one side of the camp to the other. Bomb's ready at any second though, all it needs is a little unicorn zap.

Radiant takes a few deep breaths, wishes for some peace and a nap, and detonates the bomb-from a safe distance of course.

She then begins moving as fast as she can towards Bottle and the prisoners, using her Minor Illusion cantrip to create illusory sounds of ponies and griffons screaming and yelling to add to, hopefully, the already chaotic situation. She also tries to stay upwind of the fire to avoid breathing in the undoubtedly unpleasant fumes from the lab-turned-bonfire.

After a short fizzle, the bomb and tent explode loudly upward in a huge plume of red and green fire, and all sorts of purplish, red, and other foul smokes.

For reference, this but more colorful:

Anyways, that caught their attention. :pcstare:

The patrol that was headed for the prisoner tents immediately heads north, and shortly after the explosion you can hear someone at the watchtowers repeatedly blowing a loud warning horn. The entire camp is on alert now, unsurprisingly, but it seems like efforts are focused on containing that fire. Fliers in the area are circling the fire, trying their best to get some rain clouds on it, but that alchemical fire seems like it'll burn from some time.

Bottle quickly motions for everyone who can't move quickly to get in the cart, then, attaches himself to it. He then sprints straight for the exit as fast as he can, leading the rest of the prisoners with him.

Radiant peeks up at Gothic while running as fast as she can and sends a quick Message. "See any hostages that can't move fast anymore and aren't on the cart? Please corral them over to Bottle!"

Rushing out, Bottle sees a familiar griffon pinning that talkative guard to the ground, his front talon clenched around his beak. He doesn't say a word as he watches you go, but follows your movement perfectly in a very birdlike and somewhat threatening way.

It takes six seconds for Radiant and Ray to meet up with Bottle, all prisoners in tow. Gothic is not far behind, neither is the old monk, now at the prisoner's tents.

You hear a loud voice call out in Draconic, but it seems to echo into regular ponyspeak (english) ((old english)) as if two voices were crying out at the same time.

"THE TIME FOR PRISONERS HAS ENDED, BRING THEM TO RUIN"

You start to see several more fires light up in through the fog, then rapidly a dozen. You can see clear enough, they're arrows coated in pitch, lit on fire and aimed at the wagon.

You see four guards attempting a blockade ahead of you, and in the proximity four archers taking cover in the bushline aimed at you. Right now Gothic's one round behind, but the rest of you are galloping at full speed.

You figure you can go through them, try to run around them, or try to run the cart through the brush and trees.

Otherwise, initiatives been rolled. :pcstare:

"I'm running on fumes. I've got 1 simple spell left and my cantrips but that's it. I don't trust the cart in the brush and trees though. Maybe we can go right through them?"

"Screw it, I'm going in." Bottle screams in rage as he charges straight through the guards. He can take them. (Dropping into rage if applicable.)

Things happen very quickly, and hanging around the edges watching the group's back means Gothic finds herself lagging behind the others when they need someone watching their front. She sees a few spots of brightness light up on the distance and, realizing what's about to happen, flies forward as quickly as she can, trying to come up with a few bright ideas for impromptu firefighting.

Bottle, already in rage, smacks one of the guards with his club and then charges through and out.

Bottle Bash thunders through the spearwall, making a charge attack on a guard before rushing through!
d20 = 20, CRITICAL HIT!!
14 damage total, guard is knocked the heck out!
Bottle SLAMS into the cultist with an inertia more than twice the size of him. That bugpony is now on the ground and has stars circling his eyes awful fierce.

Bottle suffers a number of attacks while charging through the spearwall though, and while two hit the cart and his armor in the order, the last lacerates his side, doing 5 damage.

That doesn't stop him from going full speed down the path, though, with a cart full of ponies in tow.

One down, but a camp-full of enemies remain. Escape is your sole objective. Anywhere along the open NW border is considered out for this encounter. Alternatively, you can try and climb the cliffs now that the prisoners are mostly to safety.

Then the guards get to actually act instead of make opportunity attacks.

Bottom left one throws his spear at either Bottle or the cart, but misses his mark.

Top left one charges bottle (not pictured), and deals another 5 damage to Bottle.

Top right one takes a 5 foot step south, then readies an attack for later. He looks ready to do something with that spear.

It's now Blinding Ray's turn.

Ray casts Sanctuary on Bottle (For one minute enemies must make wisdom saves before attacking bottle, on a failed save they must choose a new target or lose their attack, 13 DC. Attacks from Bottle break the spell), and then gallops away from the camp as fast as possible (60feet, since he cast a spell).
