Another year, another slightly-dented satellite.

Things go well at first. Unfortunately, that drop had jiggled one of the power connectors loose. The probe fails to turn on, and is dead in orbit forever. Chrysalis gets the dubious honor of the first mission failure.

Launch: 1 PASS
Earth Orbital Burn: 81 PASS
Earth Orbital Activities: 94 FAIL

Not Missiles loses 3 budget as a result. (And yes the probe still gets +1% like I said it would.)

It's strange, seeing humans in the Pegasopolis control room. But they're there out of a sense of unity, and together they will reach the stars or die trying. Speaking of dying, Kishmaraaf's finest waits atop the ponies' rocket.

No rocket so far has failed. And that record holds today as the citizen is sent into the heavens.

Above the sky, the capsule's tiny engine places a man in orbit. Below the sky, humans and ponies hope he won't spend eternity there.

The warning light flashes. A moment of panic. Upon analysis, he finds a clog in the atmospheric filtering system. Communications go back and forth between the citizen and the ground crew. Soon the decision is made: the clog is minor and will not interfere with the mission. They remain go for EVA.

Is he nervous, stepping out of the airlock, after what had just happened? Who can say? But he has a duty, to Kishmaraaf, to all creatures of the world. He exits the capsule, a tiny tether his only lifeline. There is only about half an hour of light before the capsule orbits into the dark side of the planet, but no other being has ever experienced those thirty minutes. Regretfully, he returns to safety without incident.

The time comes to fire the engine again, the tiny little piece of equipment that is his only hope for survival. Thankfully, it performs admirably and he is soon on a course into the atmosphere.

This isn't his first time dropping from space, and it seems it won't be his last. It's not so bad the second time.

Parachutes deploy and the citizen gently drops into the ocean with recovery ships standing by to pick him up.

Launch: 83 PASS
Earth Orbital Burn: 11 PASS
Earth Orbital Activities: 89 FAIL
Saving throw: 75 FAIL
Minor clog in filter, proceed with mission.
EVA: 32 PASS
Earth De-Orbit Burn: 43 PASS

Kishmaraaf and Pegasopolis have put both the first man in orbit and performed the first EVA! They split the 12 MB from Pegasopolis claiming second in space, 16 from first in orbit, and 11 from first space walk, for a total of 19 MB to Kishmaraaf and 20 to Pegasopolis.

e: And I totally forgot about the anti-failure event. Whoops. Well you still have it then.

Fellow revolutionary citizens, rejoice! The endless and wondrous ingenuity of Kishmaraaf has brought victory once again! This June, a patrotic citizen reached lofty heights of Earth orbit through unrivaled wisdom of Glorious Leader and fearsome determination of Kishmaraaf people.

What's more, Kishmaraaf's charity is unrivaled as well. Lesser nation of Pegasopolis was allowed to join orbital mission, and in some small part they share in triumph and glory. Surely they cannot help but be awed by and grateful towards our mighty nation! All will know that Kishmaraaf is best!

Three, two, one... and the rocket is not fine. The engine self-tests fail and the computer triggers the emergency abort before ignition. Upon investigation, cracks are found in the combustion chamber. The whole mission has to be scrubbed.

At least it didn't explode.

One more time!

This time, ol' faithful makes fire. The good way, though. And up Kevin goes.

And down Kevin comes. And into the sea. Drones can swim, right?

Launch: 24 PASS
Reentry: 66 PASS
Recovery: 36 PASS

Chrysalis finally puts someone in space! They get 6 budget for it.

EVA: 97%

Elytron goes for the one-up.

AGAIN at the last second. What is with these rockets? But this time it was just the computer being temperamental. Try turning it off and on again. A few hours later Elytron follows Kevin into the sky. Hopefully she'll follow him back out of it.

The capsule performs admirably, putting Elytron into a nice round orbit. She even gets to go outside for a bit. A few hours later, it keeps up the good work and sends her back towards her home world.

Everything goes swimmingly, so to speak.

Launch: 88 FAIL
Last second abort, minor issue, reroll launch.
Launch: 76 PASS
Earth Orbital Burn: 11 PASS
Earth Orbital Activities: 59 PASS
EVA: 25 PASS
Earth Deorbital Burn: 46 PASS
Reentry: 67 PASS
Recovery: 51 PASS

That works out to a total of 12 more budget (6 for third in orbit, 4 for third EVA, 2 for another being in space).

December 8, 1960

Pegasopolis Lunar Flyby
Two-Stage Rocket: 90%
Interplanetary Satellite: 86%

Up, up and away. Bon voyage, little probe!

Everything goes well. Until it doesn't. When it comes time to fire its engine to enter lunar orbit, it fails to shut off when it should. Burning until the fuel runs out, the probe is left in a useless erratic orbit.

Launch: 43 PASS
Earth Orbital Burn: 16 PASS
Earth Mission Burn: 26 PASS
Lunar Orbital Burn: 88 FAIL

Mission failed. Budget decreases by 3.

December 19, 1960

Kishmaraaf Orbital Docking

Orbital Satellite: 96%
Docking: 45%
A Stalwart Citizen: 20%

Kishmaraaf is still the way paver when it comes to space. Today they will send up the first (human) woman and she will demonstrate her docking expertise! Everything goes as announced, all the way into orbit.

But the changelings are not the only ones plagued with computer errors this month. The capsule's computers fail to enable the docking clamps and there is nothing ground control can do without endangering the capsule.

There is a brief scare when the engine to de-orbit the capsule cuts out early, but quick thinking and a quicker wrench from the Stalwart Citizen restarts the engine, saving the mission as well as her life.

It is a disappointment to Kishmaraaf, but not a disaster.

Launch: 11 PASS
Earth Orbital Burn: 58 PASS
Earth Orbital Activities: 77 PASS
Docking Module Power On: 65 PASS
Docking: 71 FAIL
Save: 85 FAIL
Computer error, docking failed.
Earth deorbit burn: 93 FAIL
Save: 20 PASS
Reentry: 24 PASS
Recovery: 82 PASS

Docking failed, budget decreases by 2.

The docking module remains in orbit, and will be usable until the end of December 1961. Intercepting it will require an extra Earth Orbital Rendezvous check using your capsule's safety.

Two-Stage Rocket: 91-2%

Rainbow hates being in second place. But being third would be even worse. So her engineers cut a few corners, what's the worst that can happen?

Absolutely nothing, that's what. Being fast wins again.

Earth Orbital Burn: 20 PASS
Earth Mission Burn: 80 PASS

Kishmaraaf is still the leader and now they will land something on the moon for the first time! Only a matter of time until Kishmaraaf people walk on moon, too.

Or perhaps it was only a matter of time until a rocket caught fire on the pad. What is left of the probe lands on the concrete in pieces.

Launch: 100 FAIL
Major fire, all equipment lost.

Next year's budget decreases by 6.

Launch: 27 PASS
Earth Orbital Burn: 2 PASS
Earth Mission Burn: 1 PASS
Lunar Orbital Burn: 17 PASS

Not Missiles Lunar Probe Landing
Rushing: -1%
Two-Stage Rocket: 91-1%
Lunar Probe: 84-1%
Photo Reconnaissance: 65-1%

If this one doesn't catch fire on the pad, they'll already be ahead of Kishmaraaf.

The rocket does not catch fire on the pad and the probe is off and away towards the moon. It successfully reaches lunar orbit.

But the engine burn to de-orbit cuts out early, leaving the probe in an erratic orbit, doomed to eventually impact the surface.

Launch: 69 PASS
Earth Orbital Burn: 18 PASS
Earth Mission Burn: 74 PASS
Lunar Orbital Burn: 58 PASS
Lunar De-Orbital Burn: 87 FAIL
Premature engine failure, left in erratic orbit.

Not Missiles loses 6 budget.

Kishmaraaf has big plans for boosters. Don't even need them this launch but testing is testing, and citizen is stalwart.

And capsule is unreliable! The capsule's engine fails to ignite, leaving the stalwart citizen plunging back to earth. At least heat shield and parachutes are up to high Kishmaraaf standards.

Launch: 63 PASS
Earth Orbital Burn: 84 FAIL
Engine burn failure, go to reentry.
Reentry: 14 PASS
Recovery: 14 PASS

For failing to even reach orbit, Kishmaraaf suffers a 10 budget loss.

December 13, 1961

Pegasopolis Mars Flyby
Interplanetary Satellite: 91%

Millions of miles away, if a robot could think, maybe it'd be worried about its luck.

But its hypothetical fears turn out to be unfounded. Back on Earth, Pegasopolis receives the most detailed images ever of the red planet.

Mars Orbital Burn: 35 PASS
Mars Orbital Activities: 58 PASS

For getting the first Martian flyby, Pegasopolis gets 8 more budget. Unfortunately there are no canals to swim in, so your interplanetary pool party will have to wait.
